Why are my thumbnails shown as COLOUR BARS??

Post by angenray »

My editing software is Canopus' Edius 2.5. I have exported my DVD video (1hr 40m) to MPEG-2 Program Stream (.m2p). I am trying out DVD Workshop 2 for my authoring software. Why when I load this video file, does it show up as colour bars on the thumbnail? That is not the only problem - it does not seem to respond the same way my other video files respond (e.g. when I load raw AVI files, they have a proper picture thumbnail, respond to adding chapters, and transfer to the menus without fail). I love the intelligence of this software so far - but what is the limitation with m2p files? Or am I doing something wrong?

Please help!!

Will Canopus export your video as a DVD compliant MPEG2 file? (with a MPG extension rather than m2p)

I don't think m2p is on the list of compatible files.

I must admit I do not know much about mpeg, but my software uses the *.m2p or *.m2v file extension when choosing between MPEG-2 Program Stream or Elementary Stream. My only other option for DVD export is to create the VOB files. What I fail to understand is how there is more than one extension for "MPEG-2" files. I was reading the 'supported' files on the Ulead website and they list "MPEG-2" but not the actual extensions - so I just assumed that all MPEG-2 files were compatible.

Thank you for your replies. I will contact Canopus and ask about the MPG extension.

I need to add some information so it might help someone solve my problem. Even the *.mpg files found in Ulead's Content\Video directory that come with the software, display the thumbnails as colored bars. This leads me to believe that something else is wrong. Especially as my Canopus support person claims to be using M2P files without a problem in DVD Workshop. All these files in question with Workshop, show up fine in Movie Factory 5 plus trial, but I find that software too limiting in chapters and menu customization. Any more ideas out there?

Try re-installing WS2.

Yes, I tried that already and that does not change anything. I sure would love someone from Ulead to be able to tell me whether this is typical in the 'trial' version, as perhaps it is that simple. However, I am not willing to spend the $$ before solving this annoyance. I do not think it is because it is a 'trial' version because I own Movie Factory 2se and they show up the same way in that program. Funny why they are fine in the trial of MF 5Plus.

The other thing that I tried is creating another quick movie that was only 5 mins. in length, and exporting to MPEG-2 from Canopus. This file acted the exact same way. By the way, Canopus technical support confirms that *.m2p files are in fact MPEG2 COMPLIANT.

I did spend more time on it again this morning and even though the thumbnails are hidden behind these colored bars, I was able to use them in a menu. I am not able to just drag them in - I actually have to create an object and then place the chapter on top of the object. It is trickier not being able to see the content, esp. when creating your chapters, but the file does work 'in the background' so to speak.

Do you know what I mean by the Contents\Video files that come with the program (S01_NTSC and R03 PAL0? Do yours show up as white roses and a green baseball player on the thumbnail, or do you see color bars too? Just curious.

Thanks for your dedication to solving this problem.

My thumbnails show up OK I only get those bars when I delete a video from the hard drive and so the bars are a way of telling me the file is no longer existent on my system.

I suspect you may have a faulty installation or a missing codec.
Try the re-installation procedure as outlined Here.

It goes a bit deeper than simply uninstalling from the Windows Control Panel which would still leave traces behind.

THANK YOU!!!!

Hi Steve,

I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart! My frustrations have finally come to an end and I can actually really TRY this version out. It was not the clean uninstall that did the trick but the very first patch (although I continued to patch all 3). I cannot believe I did not think of something that simple, but I guess I just assumed the 'trial' version that you download would be 'ready for use'. Do you know how excited I was to apply that patch, launch the program and VOILA! see my thumbnails!!!!! YAHOO! Not only that, but the rest of the program seems stable now. I was getting memory errros and limitations on other things too. Of course, I just assumed it was my Canopus file rather than an unstable version that needed patching.

Anyhow, I am in your debt. Thank you very much. Cheers to a fellow Brit! (Born in Essex, England).

Thanks again,

Angela :D :D :D :D

Hi Steve,

I think I celebrated too early. The program now LOCKS on me when I'm on the Finish screen and want to Burn to Disc. It locks so badly that my whole computer locks up and the only way out is to hard boot the pc. I've tried several times and same thing. My guess is one of the patches is causing a problem. I put all 3 of them on, as per your instruction without really paying attention to what they were patching. Does order matter? I patched 4, 5 and then the DLT one.

Hope this one is easier to solve. Thanks.

Hi again Steve,

I did another clean uninstall and just applied patch 4 (Build 2.231). I reviewed all the other patches a bit more carefully and they did not seem applicable, so I left them alone. I no longer get hung up on the Burn to Disc button.

Just thought I would let you know.

Thanks!
