Narration barely audible

Post by Mike Warren »

On Studio 10, I narrated my film documetary. However, the microphone sound level, before rendering, is so low I can hardly hear myself. So I used sound filters to amplify the sound of my voice on the timeline. Okay, that's one bandaid. But... my problem is not over. I render my film documentary and burn to DVD. But when I play back, I note the narration volume is okay in places while barely audible again in other places, exactly the way it was before I added sound filter to amplify volumn. But when I checked the original (before rendering) the volumn was okay, boasted by the sound filter. But... not after rendering??? And why is volumn so low that I must use sound filter to begin with? Thanks for what ever help you can give. Mike

The sound is not recorded by VS but by your audio device, whatever that is

You have, in all likelyhood, reduced the volume for the mic input to a minimum. Increase the input level for your mic and try again.

Heinz is talking about the audio controls in the Windows audio master control (the little speaker icon in the system tray in bottom right).

Now for my part, I never use the internal audio recorder in VS. I had similar problems to yours when I started out with VS7 5 years or so ago. Then I started to use a third party audio program (Nero Wave Editor) and found I could control lots more things about my narration and overall audio through that; apply filters to make my voice sound more natural; trim added music; trim out some unwanted audio; etc etc. Now I use this third party software exclusively, even though I know the audio controls in VS 9 and 10+ are so much better than what I started with in VS7.

And of course, apart from Nero, there are a variety of other sound editors out there, including free ones like Audacity...
