Convert step got some problems 257.0.0

Post by mikevitiello »

I recently updated to the new patch for vs10. The first proble I have is that I cannot insert music from a CD source. The program blows up. Then, when I try to create a DVD, I get the above message and can't get past that. I have never been able to load from a cd before, but the convert problem is new with the patch.

If you've never been able to insert music from a CD then you do have some underlying problem. Is your VS a download or boxed version? What is your procedure for ripping from the CD?

Hi Jeff, and thanks.
I downloaded vs10 and got a hard back up copy. When I first tried the downloaded patch posted on the web. I got a serious error and was no longer able to use. So I reloaded from the hard drive and applied the patch with the same problem. After consulting with the technical service, they told me of a special way to remove the old program entirely, reinstall vs10 and then gave me another url where yet a new download of the patch was available. I installed all of them and things seem to work OK. By that I mean that I also had a problem with fonts, same as loading from cds, program blew up but no longer does. Now only the cd problem still exists. However, when I tried to create a dvd, same way I have done a myriad of times before, this new message came up. That is why I think it is due to new patch. By the way, I created an avi file and tried to create the dvd by loading the file, but the same problem happened.

Let's work on the burning issue first, as I think it's more important. (You can get around the audio issue by ripping with another program and simply importing that file.)

Why did you apply the patch? Just in the hopes of fixing the audio issue? Most people use the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" mantra here, but if you were having other problems...

What happens if you do a clean uninstall then reinstall, but don't apply the patch. Can you burn then?

you are right re. the cds. I copy them first on my hard drive, then I can insert from there with no problem. It's annoying, but I get around. The other problem with the fonts was really disturbing, because I could not make any changes to the titles. The patch seems to have taken care of that.
I don't want to do the remove and re-install unless I have to. I am sure, however, this will need to be done. Unfortunately I won't have time to do this for a couple of days. In the mean time, I can give the AVI to a friend who will be able to cut a dvd for me.
I am a little frustrated with this VS10 and subsequent patches. This version does not seem to be too stable...

It obviously has a lot to do with one's system. I have VS10+, without the patch, and I have no problems.

Please tell us your workflow leading up to the Convert Step error:
•How you capture your footage
•The capture properties
•The project properties
•The burn properties
•Have you ever been able to burn a DVD
•Can you create an iso image or DVD folders

And lastly, are you following the Recommended Procedure?

Yes, I was able to burn DVDs. I have done at least a dozen with VS10, before the patch. SO I am familiar with the recommended procedures, the caption and DVD preferences. I checked all those before I posted my comments. There is nothing there that I have not done before.
I have to leave this for the day. Please do post any other comments you might have and I will reply tomorrow.
Thanks.

I have gotten this error in the past. The only thing I had done differently at the menu stage was check the Auto Fade Out First Play To Menu box in the menu stage Project Settings. Unchecking that allowed me to burn, checking gave me the Convert Step error every time. I never figured out why, just unchecked the box. The moral to my story...are you doing anything differently at the menu stage that you weren't doing when you successfully burned? May not necessarily be the Auto Fade Out box, could be something else. It may, in fact, take some trial and error on your part to figure it out.

The 'convert step got some problems' message usually comes when the Video Studio burning module has to convert something to make it DVD-compliant during the burning phase. I know you say you follow the recommended procedures, but can you please confirm that you do your edits, then go to Share > Create Video File > DVD, and create a DVD-compliant mpeg-2 of your project. You then go to Share > Create Disc > DVD and insert that mpeg-2, make your menu and burn.

Or do you edit and go straight to Share > Create Disc? Many people do that with no problems; others do it and it mostly works but there may come a time when it doesn't; and for some people it doesn't work at all.

That is why we recommend the two step procedure of first producing the DVD-compatible mpeg-2 and only then proceeding to burn the disc. Puts less stress on the computer.

Problem solved

Post by mikevitiello »

Jeff/Ken,
Thanks for your replies.

Jeff, the Auto Fade out was not checked out. I put a check mark there, just in case, but the problem persisted. Note that this was a very short video and I had no menus.

Ken, Funny how one could swear about following procedures...Anyway, I had not read them for a while and re-read them tonight. Since I have a 1.7ghz machine, I always capture to AVI, as per recommendation. When I created files, however, I maintained the DV format, as I thought this would make sense internally and as I previously said, I never had a problem before. Per your suggestion, and after re-reading the procedures, I created a MPEG file, and the problem disappeared. Many Thanks...
Now for the last problem, any idea as to why the program blows up when I try to insert from CD? This by the way has never worked in 10.
