Hello,
I'm trying to help a chinese friend install the chinese language Visual Studio 7 SE release.
Under a Windows XP Pro French language all we get is ??? instead of chinese language menus, even when asian languages have been installed on the system.
Under a Windows XP Pro Chinese, we get a mixture of ?? and odd characters, some of which do not even seem to be chinese (are they japanese ones ?).
In both cases the product is not usable.
It seems to me that it is a character encoding problem, but how do I solve it?
Many thanks for any hint.
Bruno

Hi,
Most Ulead SE versions will have several language editions in it. However, to have the correct edition you will have to choose which language to install in the beginning.
I would suggest to install a edition that matches the language of your Windows. To install a different language might get you the wrong character issue (the ??? problem).
If you insist to install the product in a different language, you must have Multi-language User Interface for Windows to be installed. For MUI, you need to contact Microsoft for help.

Check character set
Hi Bruno,
I don't have a direct answer to your question, but I have a few more questions... answers to which may give someone an idea of what's wrong.
Cantonese and Mandarin are dialects of Chinese... they're just different ways of pronouncing the same Chinese characters. However, there are 2 Chinese character sets that are used - traditional Chinese (used in HK and Taiwan) and simplified Chinese (used in China, Singapore, etc.)
Is your Chinese XP OS traditional Chinese or simplified Chinese? Are you trying to install a traditional Chinese version of Ulead or a simplified version? I don't know what traditional/simplified versions of Ulead are available... this is just something to think about and maybe ask Ulead about.
Also, could you post a pic of the characters you see on the Chinese OS (CTRL+PrtSc to take a screen capture)? My guess is that maybe some of the characters that are the same in traditional and simplified fonts show up correctly while other characters don't. We'll be able to tell if any chars are Japanese (Kanji char set) once we get a visual look at your problem.
Have you contacted microsoft about the MUI? The MS tech support office in HK is pretty good. (You get to log 2 free support issues with each registered version of Windows.)
