ksuwildcat93,
Am I to infer from your post that all source files must be the same aspect ratio for smart proxy to effectivly work? I am starting a multi-camera project (wedding) and one of the cameras shot using 16:9, the others 4:3.
Should I convert the one 16:9 source AVI I have to 4:3 before using in the project? (I am working on a small testcase now to verify...)
I want the final output to be 16:9, using moving paths to select the best part of the 4:3 sources to keep.

Really you can do whatever you want. The key is to know what you are looking at and why and how to change it if you need to. Where you will get messed up is if you have proxy set on something different than your project settings and render settings. They all need to match or you will not be viewing what you are actually creating (if your files are big enough that proxy files are being generated by the program.)
You can view 4:3 or 16:9 files with all the settings on the other ratio but your screen will be distorted or have black lines accordingly and you will have to adjust.
If your goal is to ultimately have a 16:9 (widescreen) video then I would probably approach it with the proxy and project settings set at 16:9. (Be sure to set BOTH of them to match and then also select 16:9 in the render dialog) On the 4:3 clips go into media source options and select KEEP ASPECT RATIO. Then you will be able to preview the clips as they will appear in your 16:9 production and you can set your moving paths as you wish.
Hope that helps!
