Thanks for the codec program. I took a screenshot of the list:

Can I know why you have pvdcodec / x264vfw / vp6vfw codec packs installed? Will it fix if you removed these codec packs?

If you can, some list for Audio / DirectShow / DirectX Media codec packs would also be great.

Thanks for the reply. I have x264 for some high definition videos I have on my PC, not sure about the others though. I will post the list of other codecs tomorrow. What would be the easiest way to remove these codec packs?

pdvcodec is not the problem. This is the Panasonic DV codec for VfW support of "dvsd" avis that I also have for older software.

To analyze and get rid of broken codecs you can use a tool like CodecSniper (with great care).
But to remove codecs normally: Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices (of course, MS lists video codecs here?!) -> Hardware (of course, the codecs are software?!), scroll down to Video Codecs.
Now choose Properties and then Properties again.
You can now either look at the Properties (of course, choose properties for the 3rd time!) or Remove.
Now isn't that a simple and logical workflow from MS?

I can post the lists of the other codecs, but they are very long. Would you like me to post a series of screenshots? Or should I post the results from the export function? (seems more difficult to pick out the listed codecs from the exported text though).

I'm concerned about using CodecSniper, it says it can harm my "video system" :? Sounds a bit too risky.

I have removed the HuffYUV codec, which I no longer use, but still can't get MF5 working.

I get a warning that the vp6vfw codec is required by the system, and that it may not work properly if I remove it...

Your installed codecs would not help me at all, maybe H.T.

You don't want to start removing all your codecs (!), but only remove a codec that you installed after MF was working. This is not the case.

Since all you did was run MF, then it appears to have broken itself. You need to check if your other video-related software is working. Maybe it did break a codec installation somehow, but I personally don't think so.

I would start by checking what is running, and disable anything that has to do with burning (QuickDrop, whatever).

This is probably too difficult to solve here. In an earlier post I mentioned tools like Process Monitor... this could be used to help clean everything related to MF, but that would be a complex and tedious task.

Thanks for all your help. I still can't get it working, so will wait until I buy a new PC in February and try the program on that. I'll make a point of installing it before any other software

You normally have at least one restore point in XP, unless you've disabled System Restore.
