Hi,
I'm not a VideoStudio user but I'd like to provide a file that a VideoStudio 9 or 10 user can easily import.
Which of the following file types can VideoStudio import? Which is preferred?
DV/AVI Type 1?
DV/AVI Type 2?
.dv file?
Thanks for the help!
John
Best video file to Import - AVI type 1 or type 2 or .dv?

Brian -- IIRC, .dv is the extension used by MAC computer system video editing programs for DV captures. They cannot be directly opened in VS, but have to be first processed into a Windows-readable format. I played with such a file once and successfully converted using a full version of Quicktime...
J Whorfin -- as Brian says, VS will happily work with either type 1 or 2 DV/AVI (and a multitude of other formats). But just be aware that if you are capturing the DV yourself, and your computer is not overly well endowed with resources, you may have difficulty capturing stable type 2 DV. For all intents and purposes, though, unless you are a video professional and/or using some very specialised programs, you will never need to capture or use Type2. Some high-end programs, e.g. Adobe Premiere Pro, will automatically capture in Type 2, so you will need a decent computer if your use this program.

Ken,
Thank you.
We've been getting more requests to digitize our customers old vhs, Hi8mm, etc tapes onto a portable HD that they can take home to edit.
So I'm trying to figure out what the most common, high quality, dv file types are in use by the various DV software editing programs.
.dv is good for all the Mac iMovie, iDVD, etc. and it looks like DV/AVI would be good for most PC applications. It's the Type 1 or Type 2 that seems to be my stumbling block. Most web sites for editing software say DV/AVI but they don't specify which type.
I thought Pinnacle, Premiere, Movie Maker 2, Vegas, Magix and Muvee wanted Type 2 but now I'm not so sure...
Thank you for your help.

It will really depend on the program you use to capture with. VS can capture either Type 1 or 2, though as I say you need a pretty good computer for type 2. I have noted also that Adobe Premiere Pro has erratic audio distortions inserted when you open a Type 1 file in it... Video Studio, if you are capturing Type 2 with an under-resourced computer, will show jerky video and/or audio. These errors are not shown if you use Type 1.
The wonderful, simple and free capture program, WinDV (which, as its name suggests) can be set to capture either Type 1 or 2 and does so without any problems, including dropped frames. I am not sure, however, how it handles Type 2 on an under-resourced computer...
