"Unable to compress the audio"

Post by ChrisParis »

Hey all, great forum and very helpful so far.

I'm using VS 9 and doing some simple trimming of an avi file (XVID MPEG-4 video, MPEG Layer-3 audio). All the right codecs are installed on my machine.

I'm just trying to trim out some scenes and then save back to the original format. After editing, I am selecting SHARE-> CREATE VIDEO FILE -> SAME AS FIRST VIDEO CLIP. When it converts, I get the message:

Unable to compress the audio
[17103:10:5]

The file plays back without sound.

If I try any other format, the sound works, but is out of sync with the video by a few seconds.

Any suggestions? Let me know if I left out any pertinent info, and thanks.

Xvid and MPEG4 are similar but not the same. They are highly compressed formats.

Couple of things you can try.
Option 1. Decompress the original Xvid (or MPEG4) file to another format either DV or MPEG2. and do your editing with the new file.
(see our links to free stuff for a program called Super)

Option 2. Export the audio file as a WAV file.
Replace the existing audio track with the new one.

Okay, thanks. I downloaded Super, and decompressed my Xvid avi file to a standard MPEG-4. When I edited it in VideoStudio, it saved okay (no error messages) but the audio loses sync with the video after about ten seconds of playing.

MPEG4 isn't 'standard' its as highly compressed as the Xvid.
You need to decompress to MPEG2.

Ahhh.... didn't know that. Will try again.

As I was thinking about it, I also have to be sure the bitrates are just right, I bet. Of course, that's an issue in SUPER, not VideoStudio, but I will keep you (and the other readers) posted as to how this all works out.

Thanks again for the speedy answers! Very helpful.
