Haven't been able to record narration for my project in audio mode. The only way I've been able to add it is to record a WAV file in another program and then import it to the voice track of the project's timeline.
This seems like an awfully unhandy way of doing things as I can't view the video while I'm recording voiceovers.

It might seem unhandy, but that is precisely the way I always do my voiceovers... and I bet a lot of others do too. I play the video in VS, then stop and type up a script paragraph; then view some more and type another paragraph. Then I record the script in third party software, with a separate WAV file for each paragraph. Then insert in the timeline at the relevant places. The controls in the third party software allow me much more sophisticated effects/filters than are available in VS, and the written script allows for fewer mistakes or erratic narration.
That is not to say, though, that the inbuilt recording facility within VS should not be working. Can you tell us exactly what steps you took, including where your microphone was plugged into the computer. Also, did you check the Windows audio mixer control (speaker icon in the system tray) to make sure that the MIC input was not muted for some reason and that otherwise the volume levels were sufficiently high...

To me, it seems like working around the problem rather than solving it.
Overall, I would rather record my narration on the voiceover track while watching my video because my script has a lot of blank passages and a lot of short phrases.
I've tried reinstalling VS 8, downloading all applicable updates from the Ulead web site and checked and double checked my microphone and sound card setting in Windows volume control and so far, nothing has helped. My microphone is plugged in to the line in jack on my sound card which is integral with my motherboard. The set-up worked fine with the sound program I am using. (Roxio easy media creator 8)

When you check your audio settings, make sure to check both the playback and recording settings.
You can go into control panel>sounds and audio devices and click on the "audio" tab. On my pc, I have Realtek AC97 Audio (it's a bit old now!)
You should see both "Sound Playback" and "Sound Recording" controls. Click on the "volume" button for your audio, and this will bring up the "Master Volume" dialogue box in the playback section, and the "Recording Control" dialogue from the recording section. There's a lot of info in there, and it's all too easy to miss something.
On both dialogue boxes, clicking on options>properties will bring up the properties dialogue boxes. Make sure that the "microphone" box is checked.
To my mind, Uncle Ken's suggestion is not so much a workaround as a great improvement in adding the voiceover, but maybe you're not too fussed about audio quality.
