DVD Burn Properties for Video Files with Diff. Audio
I am working on a project where I have already created my video file and placed it as the #2 video file on my DVD media timeline of the burner module. This video file property for audio is set to Dolby 2/0. Video file #1 contains a Dolby Trailer that uses Dolby 5.1 audio. With both of these video files in my DVD media timeline, which audio property should I set for my burn property - Dobly 2/0 or Dolby 5.1? Obviously, I want the Dolby Trailer to playback on my home system in 5.1 surround, and I want my main movie file to playback in Dolby stereo.

Cheers,
Bryan P.

I may be wrong on this, and if I am, someone will very quickly correct me. But if your two files are otherwise completely DVD-compliant on the video side, and you have the 'Do not convert compliant mpeg files' box checked, then VS will burn the DVD as is i.e. it will use the compliant 2 channel AC-3 audio in one clip and the compliant 5.1 audio in the other. That is what the 'do not convert' box is all about...

Ken,
Thanks for your reply. I understand what you're saying. My only concern was that in my Burn Properties, I still have to choose either Dolby 2/0 stereo or Dolby 5.1. If I choose 2/0 stereo, will that render the 5.1 Dolby Trailer as a stereo output when viewing the final DVD thru my home surround sound system, or if I choose 5.1, will it mess up the stereo sound in my main movie file, since there are no surround sound tracks in it? I just don't want to lose the 5.1 surround sound in the 30 sec. Dolby Trailer.
On the video side, both files are compliant MPEG-2 files, the only difference being that the Dolby Trailer file is upper field first (because that's how it came off a demo DVD) and the main video file is lower field first. I always check the 'Do not convert compliant mpeg files' box when burning DVD's.

Re: DVD Burn Properties for Video Files with Diff. Audio
Note that the recommended procedure is to have just a single video file.blplhp wrote:I am working on a project where I have already created my video file and placed it as the #2 video file on my DVD media timeline of the burner module.
You should burn to a DVD RW disk, and set your output audio properties to 5.1. If that works, there's no need to try again with it set to 2.0, although it would be interesting to know if that too worked and resulted in 5.1 audio for the trailer - that would validate Ken's theory.

OK, I suppose I can be a guinea pig in this case and burn two versions and see what happens.
I could probably use an extra coaster inside the house anyway (just kidding, hopefully both burn properties will produce the same intended results).
I will let the forum know what happens when my project is complete.
Thanks Ken, Jeff and 2Dogs,

Hi Bryan
Burn a TS folder to your hard drive, saving a disc.
You can play the TS folder using Power dvd or similar.
Selecting the info from the player, should show the properties of the various files being played.
Trevor
ps..I do not think there is a problem, as long as both mpegs have the same video properties, the audio should burn ¡¥as is¡¦

Thanks Trevor, great hearing from you again. I will try that out. The only difference in the two video files is that the Dolby Trailer file is UFF and the video file is LFF, otherwise the exact same.
And 2Dogs....................great set-up. I do have a pretty killer surround sound system in my living room, but I may have to invest in that headset. Very cooool.

My theory, as you call it, is based on the thought that at the end of the editing process, you are producing two files which, though having some different properties, are nonetheless both totally DVD-compliant. When you open the burning module and select DVD as your target output, and insert your two files, it is then not necessary to set any specific burning properties. If the 'do not convert' box is checked, the burning module will give preference to the properties of each file, and ignore the properties you set in the burning phase. As I say, that is the precise purpose of the 'do not convert' box...
