cropping vertical pictures

I have cropped vertical pics fairly tight and have found that the top of the pic when viewed on a television has been cut off. Why is this so? and does it mean I must crop in future with enough space at the top to view all?

Yes, the culprit is called "TV overscan". It varies a bit between different TV sets but is usually around 10 to 15 % all around your picture, not just the top.
