I'm losing the right channel of audio on dv capture

Post by _-GoMeZ-_ »

The goal here is to make a DVD-R from a DV tape I have about 5 tapes I need to get onto DVD's so I can pull out one segment of the best 15 minutes.

I'm capturing ( or doing my due dillegence in trying ) some DV files from a Sony camera using Movie Maker Wizard / VideoStudio 8 using a firewire card to my laptop.

I'm capturing in DV type-2 to an .avi file, during capture as I listen to it it sounds fine, when I play the clip back I only get left channel sound. The captured file properties show Microsoft AVI files --- OpenDML Video compression "DV Video Encoder -- type 2 24 Bits, 720 x 480, 4:3", Audio compression "PCM 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo"

So far I have created a DVD once but the files filled the little hard drive up so much I had to delete them to make room to do a second. Unfortunately I have no idea what settings I had used to get that first successful one to work.

Now it seems I may have deleted something else to make it work properly. If not is there a base set of settings I can use to get this project done?? The proram has ALOT of adjustments to it that make it a very powerfull tool. I'm trying to do something I had hoped was pretty straight forward and simple. So far after reading the manual I think I'm more confused now than when I first tried it and after a little poking around was able to make it work.

Project Settings

NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
Microsoft AVI files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 4:3, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
DV Video Encoder -- type 2
PCM, 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo

Error Codes (none)

You are certainly doing the right thing in capturing to DV format using Firewire. This will guarantee the best quality. However, I have to make a couple of comments. First, capturing to Type 2 is both demanding on a computer with limited resources and unnecessary. Your initial audio problem may be a result of that, for instance. In the Capture page of VS8, go to the cogwheel Options icon in the middle left of screen and change the Encoder to Type 1.

Next, and most important, you simply have to get a much larger hard disc to capture your DV to. As you have found, DV produces large files (around 13 GB per hour of video). And when you are editing it, at least that amount is also required by your computer for temporary and working files etc. When I started using VS7 and 8, I too captured to my laptop via Firewire. My laptop only had a 20 GB hard disc, so I bought a 200 GB external hard drive (also connected via Firewire). That solved the problem.

I would also suggest you read the Recommended Procedure in the top sticky post on this Board. But until you resolve the hard drive issue, you will inevitably be beset by complications and problems...

DV type-1 gave me no sound at all during capture

Thanks Ken for responding so fast !

I tried using the DV type-1 but got no sound during capture, at least on type-2 I got sound. Are there other settings I'm not seeing ?

The hard drive has a 40gig partition just for these captures, I will wipe out the files as soon as the DVD is created. As soon as this project is done the machine will go back to it's primary job as a word processor.
