VS8 vs VS10 Size and Speed

Post by VS88 »

Hi All, This is my fist post ¡V sorry it¡¦s a bit of a ***¡K¡K¡K¡K..
I am a long term VS8 user and have just upgraded to VS10 to get the extra video tracks. I have searched for posts on VS10 Speed issues but have not found anything which helps me. The problem/issue I have run up against as follows.

As a test I have taken 2 MPEG2 files, 5mins and 1hr 56mins which I passed via VS8 and VS10 into DVD files on a dedicated hard disc. Comparing the results was a shock and I wonder if I am doing something wrong. As always I used 'Do not convert Compliant MPEG files'

5min MPEG2 ¡V No Menu, No Chapters ¡V
VS8 to Video_TS took 1min 6 sec and produced files of 189mb.
VS10 to Video_ts took 7min 59 sec and produced files of 203mb

5min MPEG2 ¡V 2 Chapters, 2 Menus (No Music, No Transitions, No Menu In/Out, No Motion and using the Cork Board in VS10)
VS8 - 1min 9 secs, files = 190mb
VS10 - 8min 20 sec, files = 211mb

1hr 56 min MPEG2 ¡V 5 Chapters, 2 Menus (as above for VS10)
VS8 ¡V 44min 50 secs, files = 4.3gb
VS10 ¡V 3hours 18 mins, files = 5.2gb

VS10 not only appears 4 to 6 times slower then VS8 doing the same job but also produces larger DVD output files meaning I will have to produce shorter videos or reduce bit rate ¡V neither of which appeals.

As an ex IT Project Manager (S/W Development and Systems Integration) I am familiar with feature creep and bloat but either I have not been able to find the magic switch to optimise VS10 or ULEAD have fallen into the 'Why waste time optimising the S/W, people will buy the features' mindset.

If I can not speed up VS10 and reduce its output files size this is one for Ebay as I can not return an opened pack to Amazon.

Can anyone enlighten me.

the problem is a bug with vs10+, instead of keeping your file from the timeline, you have to push create dvd, delete your file from the dvd popup, add it back in using the add file -- then it will smartrender.

If you've done a lot of editing, you have to first create a mpeg2 file, then create a dvd using the resulting file -- this is all detailed in the "recommended procedure" post.

Hi, Thanks for reply -- Some BUG. Did start to read the Sticky but as a VS8 user ¡Vthought 'Know this'. Should have read to the end as this 'solved' the problem.

Anyone know how Ulead manages to release new versions and introduce major bugs like this ¡V and why haven't they issued a fix yet. I didn't need workarounds like this in VS8.

There is also the issue that I had asked Ulead Support for help with this problem and they just said ' VS10 is slower because of the new features' and I should get a faster PC. This is obviously wrong as following the 'recommended procedures' my test project completed quicker ¡V It is a worry when their own support team do not appear to know their products as well as good people on the Forum.

Revised timings as 1hr 56min MPEG2 recording as follows:

VS8 ¡V 44 min 50sec ¡V files 4.3gb
VS10 ¡V 24mins 29secs ¡V files 4.3gb -- this includes Creating an MPEG video file to the same params as the original (14mins) and the Create DVD Folders (10mins 29secs).

Still do not like the new Menu offering as much as the simpler VS8 version but I guess I will learn to live with it
