Unalble to Burn to Dual Layer DVD

Post by Dpr01 »

Am using a Dell XPS Gen4 with 4 Gig DDR and 2x250 Gig HD in RAID 0 config; MyDVD V6 Deluxe, Philips Model 8631 DVD burner, WIndows XP MCE, and Verbatim DVR+R disks.

My project is 5.6 Gig and Ulead only acknowledges 4.7 G space on the DL (8.5 G) DVD disk. I have already replaced the DVD drive (Dell Warranty) and updated the DVD firmware. Dell has confirmed that the DVD is dual layer write capable.

Any suggestions

Go to the Ulead site and download this update: VideoStudio 8 Update Pack (Build Number: 8.01, Release Date: 2004/09/06) at http://www.ulead.com/tech/vs/vs_ftp.htm It is designed to enable dual layer burning capacity to the program. And it certainly worked in my case.

Be warned, though, that there is currently a lot of debate on this Board about the application of some of these patches and what they might do to an otherwise operating program. As I say, though, I applied this particular patch and it has worked fine and not caused any other collateral problems...

Hi Ken, thanks for helping out. I've updated the burning engine and did the patch for Videostudion 8 and yet I'm still unable to burn a double layer cd. My burner is a Pioneer DVR-108. Is there something special I have to do or some special setting I need to change? Thank you.

As a Ppostscript, I have changed the setting under Preferences to indicate a 8.5G disc, and it shows the bar as going up to 8.5 when I am putting together a project, yet when I go to burn it, it will only recognize 4.4 in the burner.

[Edited to add] I bet I need to have special double layer discs, don't I? I just checked mine and I can't tell if they are DL or not. I thought they were when I picked them out in the store but now I'm not so sure. How can I verify which type of discs I have? They just say "Verbatim, DVD+R 8X". I tore off any outer packaging a long time ago.

There is no 8x dual-layer media yet for purchase, you have single-layer media.

Hi,

I would like to point out that installing any updates for a program is how
ulead has written the update to be applied.

On that note, many users are installing the burning engine patch/update
after the official ulead updates to a program as if it's necessary. If ulead
wanted those files installed it would include them in the patch. In the latest
VS8 patch they are replacing files in the DVD directory to work along with
the update.

The burning engine patches/files are for only if one is experiencing
burning a dvd with their particular burner. READ THE INFORMATION on
that web page. Many users(new) feel they have to install those files.
Talk to tech support. Carefully read the small print on that page.
The CD/DVD burning patch is specifically for OLDER programs. All the
new distributions contain the newer correct burning files on the original
disk.
When you apply the update to VS8 it replaces files in the DVD directory
that go along with the update. All the ulead products on your machine use
that common directory (for burning). Changing those files can affect all the
ulead products using that common directory.

A user should install a patch to any program (back it up first if possible),
then run the program and burn a dvd. If they are having problems then
TRY the engine update that may affect their dvd burner. Ulead also warns
you to create a backup of the files before installing the different engine
updates. They warn you. There are THREE patches there.
Can you tell a user which one to install? The first? Then why leave the
other two older ones there.

A new user says I've installed the VS8 update and the burning engine
patch. Which burning engine patch? The one that says if this doesn't
work then restore the files. All 10 of them. A little awkward for a user that
isn't good at windows explorer and is new to this program. What a terrible
way to start out using a program you just purchased from a retail store.

If ulead wanted to update those files they would have put it
in the update. When a user installs the VS8 update it replaces the DVD
directory with files for dual-layer burning and other .dll's.

On top of that the Ulead programmers are professionals. They could easily
write the code to check the versions of these files to update correctly.
(But those files would be included in the patch and they aren't, ONLY
if one has trouble burning a dvd).

I hope this post helps new users to only apply the correct update to a program
and NOT install any engine updates UNLESS they cannot burn a dvd
correctly.

If they are double layer it is clearly mentioned on the disk itself and on the box. They are also a little bit more expensive than single layer disks.

Install Patch

Thanks for the suggestion on installing the patch. I did and VS8 still does not recognize the 8.5 Gig. Any other suggestions?

Hi, Dpr01.

I doubt you'll wonder whether you're buying single-layer or double-layer disks, when you actually buy them.

They were $24 for three disks, last time I looked. Would you notice that?

They are also labeled clearly "DOUBLE-LAYER" all over the box.

I didn't see any big packs of them -- just packs of three in jewel-cases. I forget the manufacturer.

I'm holding off on this, for now, even though my burner is DL-capable.
