VideoStudio can no longer import AVI and WAV files

Post by briantium »

I have version 9 plus a trial version of 10. Initially there was no problem with 9 importing AVI or WAV files, but now it won't import either; says it "failed". This carried over to the trial version of 10. I tried un-installing and then re-installing them but it still fails to import those files. I had a problem Sunday that led me to download some codecs and install them, but that messed up my ability to create video files at all, so I uninstalled it. Then the problem with Windows Explorer crashing on certain AVI files led me to activate the regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll to fix it, which it did. I can't remember which once caused the inability to bring in WAV and AVIs, but it was after both when I tried importing again...

The problem appears to stem from whatever happened on Sunday and it seems that your attempt to fix it may have made things worse by giving it the wrong medicine.

What happened on Sunday?
Have you tried System Restore and setting your computer back to a point before whatever happened on Sunday?

I wish I could remember what happened specifically Sunday. Obviously something I was unable to open led me to look for a codec, which led me to installing a package of codecs and that prevented me from being able to render a video at all (at least a DiVX video). So I uninstalled the package and that corrected it and enable me to render videos again. After that is when I noticed I could no longer import WAV files, which led me to look for MP3 files, which were fine. Then last night I tried to import an AVI file to edit, and that got the same error message.

I'm afraid it's entirely likely that I don't have any restoration points. Looks like I might have to re-install Windows?

I attempted a System Restore of several different dates but it is unable to complete it so nothing gets changed.
