Thanks a lot Steve, you obviously know your onions! Sorry about the long delay in replying but both my Wife and I have been "Proper Poorly!", hopefully we are better now and I should be able to get back to editing.
Yes I do get a request to "Relink" but here is the rub although the original AVI files do still exist they do cover an awful lot of elapsed time in each file(of which there are four- of up to 4GB each). I think there will be now alternative but to run them through the system and make careful notes as to which AVI file covers which time zone in the history. As I see it there is nothing too difficult in this just time and effort.
If all fails then and only then will it be back to square one!
