VS10+ Still Crashing

Post by gordonwd »

I have the problem as reported by others where VS10+ will occasionally (frequently?!) crash about 15 seconds after opening an existing project. I don't even have to do anything other than open the project and then sit back and wait. If I restart VS right after this, it usually works OK, but not always.

Anyway, I just recently made a new hardware profile and user account for video editing (as described in a procedure on this forum), so ended up with a very fast, clean boot with nothing non-essential being loaded (no network, no anti-virus, most services disabled, nothing in the startup group, etc.). So I was surprised when my first attempt at running VS10+ resulted in the same old crash! I was eventually able to get out of it via a few tricks that sometimes work, and the rest of the editing session went well.

So I posted the crash details on a Ulead Tech Support web form and we'll see what kind of response I get. I'll post back if I find anything out, but I'm not holding my breath.

You may have a corrupt video file. It can be hard to tell, because a corrupt file will often play back fine, but cause trouble for editing programs or DVD authoring programs.

What format are your files? MPEG? (All of my crashes have been caused by bad MPEGs.) Where did your video files come from? ...I suspect that they are not DV/AVI (from a DV camera).

Maybe, but the crash is not consistent as it sometimes works the 2nd time I start the program. I've always ended up successfully rendering my video files to MPEGs and eventually to DVDs.

They are all AVI files that were created by having 8mm movies converted to AVI so that I can edit them easily. Aside from the crashes, this has all been working quite well (and I've made some really nice DVDs out of my old films!).

As I expected, I got a basic "form letter" email back from Ulead tech support explaining how to remove and reinstall the product, run it with anti-virus and other programs disabled, etc. -- even though I clearly stated in my problem report that I had already done all of that! Sigh...

I responded to the email as requested, but wonder if I'll ever hear from them again. So I guess I'm stuck with my current workarounds for a while, at least.
