I have a Easy TV MPEG video capture card.
And VideoStudio 7.
Can anyone give me a brief summary of capturing video from this card?
I am using a JVC VHS-C as my source.

Sorry, I don't know anything about your particular capture card.

If you don't have a User Manual, you can download it here.

- Usually, you will have better results using the specific software that came with your capture device. If it came with an "SE" version of Video Studio, that SE version may, or may not, have been tweaked to work with your card. If it came with Video Studio SE and some other capture software, use the other software for the capture step.

- If you are making a DVD, capture to MPEG-2 because DVDs are MPEG-2. A bitrate of about 5000 kbps will allow about an hour of good quality video to fit on a single-layer DVD*. (It's generally better to capture to DV format, but I don't think your card will allow it.)

- Once you have an MPEG file, you can use Video Studio to make your DVD. (Again, depending on your version of Video Studio.)

- A couple of issues with MPEGs: The idea is to encode to MPEG once, and then transfer the MPEG to the DVD without changing the bitrate, resolution or anything else. (You can add a DVD menu without affecting the actual MPEG.)

Most editing will require your MPEG to be decoded and re-coded. For example, you can cut and splice without re-coding, but a cross-fade transition or color adjustment will require re-coding. This can reduce video quality, although it's not always noticeable. Sometimes there can be other "strange" problems when editing MPEGs, including the problem that inspired my tagline/signature below...

* That assumes LPCM audio. If you upgrade to Video Studio 10, you can use Dolby (AC3) audio which leaves more room on the DVD for more video, or more room for higher-bitrate (higher-quality) video.
