Disc Space Question

Post by sigun »

I have 140mins footage which has been converted to a Large PAL MPEG-2 file through soreneson squeeze.

Now when I upload them to Ulead and add a menu the final reading on the finish screen says that Overall disc space needed is 4.4gb for FULL dvd quality (1hour).

Now I thought that if you have over an hour or so footage that you could not fit that much onto single dvd at full quality and that it would be more than 4.4gb.

Is this normal or have I done somthing wrong to compress these files more than I should? you see I dont care how much space it is, cause I will use DL discs.

Thanks

You are correct. I don't know why Workshop is telling you that you only need 4.4GB. You would have to use a very low bitrate to squeeze almost 2.5 hours onto a single layer DVD.

Here's a handy Bitrate Calculator.

That should be fine. You can use a bitrate of about 6000 kbps and a single-layer DVD. (Many commercial DVDs are in the range of 6000 kbps.)
