DVD Import fails at 61%
The problem I am experiencing is VS10 is freezing during DVD Import.
More specifically, I am selecting CAPTURE | IMPORT FROM DVD/DVD-VR. When the "Select a DVD Title" Dialog Box pops up, I am chosing the "IMPORT" button. Once I select that, VS10 begins importing my DVD. A progress indicator initially shows about 30% and then jumps to 58% and then to 61%. At 61% the import freezes and VS10 locks up. Thus, the import fails.
I am using DVD+R disks recorded by a Sony RDR-GX330 in DVD-Video mode. The source ultimately is digital 8mm tapes sent to the RDR-GX330 via i.Link. Since these tapes are 1 hour long, the recording is performed at mode HQ.
I have experienced the problem described above on a number of different DVD's recorded in the exact same way. These Disks are playable on stand-alone (TV) and computer DVD drives with no apparent problems.
From memory, I know that once the initial import step is done, VS10 allows the titles to be actually imported to be selected by checkmark. I have not been able to get theese disks through the initial import in order to make these title selections.
I have been able to import DVD's from recordings made from a TV source from the same RDR-GX330, so I know VS10 seems to be loaded correctly.
Any suggestions?

DVD Import fails at 61%
Clarification 1:
I initially said: "From memory, I know that once the initial import step is done, VS10 allows the titles to be actually imported to be selected by checkmark... "
It should say, "From memory, I know that once the initial import step is done, VS10 allows the titles to be listed with selection checkboxes...
CLarification 2:
I have also copied all the files on the DVD directly over to my hard drive and then attempted to import using the "IMPORT DVD FOLDER" button and selecting the copied files on my hard drive. However, during initial import, I am still getting stuck at 61%.

Still experiencing same problem despiste upgrading to a different computer. The problem is that Ulead Video Studio 10 plus is getting stuck at 61% during the import process when importing directly from videos I burned to DVD. Interestingly, the exact same problem occurs when attempting to import the DVD folders. Also, the same problem occurs when I copy all the files from the DVD over to the hard drive and then attempt to import from the copied DVD folders (i.e. I copied using windows explorer). Right now I am stuck directly dragging the .VOB files into the Video Studio Library. While this works, this is a much more time consuming set of steps.
Is anyone else experiencing a problem like this? Any suggestions?

If you search the web for "DVD to MPEG", you will fine lots of programs to try. A while back I tried several of these programs. Some worked on the DVD that was giving Ulead trouble, but most (all?) of them re-coded the MPEG to lower quality/bitrate.
My nephew was using InterVideo DVD Copy ($40 - $50 USD) to copy a DVD to his iPod. From what I saw, it might be worth giving that a try. (InterVideo now owns Ulead, but DVD Copy may contain different/better underlying software.)
I've also run-across VOB2MPG (FREE!!!) recently. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks promising.
Hopefully, when Corel takes over Ulead they will fix some of these ongoing problems!
Sometimes these problems are caused by bad/defective DVDs, but if the playback software is fault-tolerant enough to play the doggone thing, you should be able to import and edit it!!!!

DVDDoug...Thanks so much for offering your help!
I will look into your suggestions, but I wanted to clarify. Are you experiencing the exact same problem I am by getting "stuck" during the initial import at 61%?
I don't think your answer will deter me from investigating the options you have suggested, but was just curious. Part of me was concerned that this problem (i.e. my exact problem of getting stuck at 61%) occurs to others besides me and that I might have missed other threads on this board talking about the exact same issue.

Still having troubles.
I decided to use VOBMerge (http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=VOBMerge) which is freeware. It seems to be working ok. So, instead of "Importing from DVD/DVD-VR" to capture my video's off my DVD's, I am now using a work-around with VOBMerge.
I believe VOBMerge is working ok since it is creating viewable videos for me. However, now that I have manuevered around this issue, I am experiencing another issue. I am getting the following error when attempting to place the .vsp file in the video library:
Unable to open file [..filename.vsp...] File format mismatch.
I am very confused as to how this error could be happening since if I do a FILE|OPEN of the .vsp, it opens and allows me to modify and re-save. It seems like if there were an issue with the .vsp, it would behave the same way as when I am attempting to place it in the library. I really need to get this and other .vsp files into the library, but am running into problems.
Would you please forward me your suggestions on how to get these .VSP files into the library.

As far as I know, there has never been a way of getting a .VSP (Video Studio Project) file in the Library Pane of any version. At least with VS10, you can use such files as though they were video files. But that does not mean they can appear like video files in the Library. They are of course stored in your Working Folder and can be inserted into your timeline in the normal way from there.

Thanks for replying Ken Berry. I am not sure I completely understand your comment though. Here is why. I have created a lot of project files.
Many of them are able to be placed in the video library. Since I am using the default UI layout, I believe the video library is located in the upper right area of the screen. At the top of that area is a drop-down box showing the various libraries. Video is the one selected.
When I right mouse click in the grey area of the video library, I get a pop-up menu option list with "Insert Video..." as an option. When I chose the "Insert Video..." option, I can see many of the files I have created, including those with the .vsp extension. I can select many of these .vsp's and they will then appear in the Video Library.
It seems like you are saying that it is not possible to place a .vsp into the library. If that is the case, my VS10+ isn't behaving that way. Further, the fact that .vsp's make it through the "All Formats" filter of the "files of type" field when you are presented with the "Open Video File" dialog box, it appears that .vsp's were intended to be loadable into the Video Library.
Can you clarify if I mistook what you intended to convey with your last comment?

Now you have me intrigued. I in fact meant what I said the way you understood it. And in fact, before posting my message, I had tried precisely to insert a VSP into the Video Library pane, and it didn't work. The progress line appeared, so VS was obviously processing the VSP file without problem, but nothing appeared in the library pane (nor in the timeline, I might add -- though I have no trouble when I actually try adding a VSP file there). So now I must have another look at this. Will get back to you if I succeed.
In that case, though, have I in turn misunderstood your question? Obviously, you are only having a problem with this one VSP file. But where did it come from? Was it made up of files you processed through VOBMerge? If so, was there any difference in their properties from mpeg-2s processed only in VS, which might explain the 'file format mismatch' error?

Well, well. Here I am back a couple of minutes later and feeling mightily embarrassed.
This time I succeeded in inserting VSP files into my Video Library pane. I had never needed to try before, and when I actually did just before my earlier post, after the progress bar appeared and disappeared, i merely cancelled out of the dialogue box which remained, thinking it had not worked. Instead, I should have clicked on Open, and when I did this time, the VSP file actually appeared.
So obviously there is something wrong with this particular VSP file of yours. So can you right click on one or more of the files from VOCMerge and tell us the properties, please?

Ken Berry, I have more information now, although, I may not fully answer the specific questions you have put forth.
The bottom line is that I have had lots of problems.
A portion of those problems started from me getting stuck at the DVD Import step. I believe I have found a reasonable work around using VOBMerge (a freeware program) to import .VOB files (since all of my videos have already been converted from 8mm tape to DVD). It would be much faster if I could just count on the DVD import process within Video Studio 10 Plus. However, I have yet to find a solution and although I am not positive, it seems others have experienced their own problems with DVD Import. At least to the users of this forum, it seems many acquire their videos through alternate methods other than through importing from DVD's, so I don't think very many people have had experience with this.
In hindsight, my next problem was not really related to the DVD import feature. Thus, I probably should have started a new question thread elsewhere. After getting the videos imported, my next concern was to add a lead-in title introducing the clips generated from the imported DVD. I built a template with many transitions and graphics and title text. For each of these lead-in titles, only the title text needed to change. So, I created my template and then saved my specific introduction title lead-in's with different specific project names.
My next step was to create .mpg's of each of the clips with the lead-in title for each clip. My goal was to batch convert these. So, I opened each project with each clip and inserted my lead-in title as a .vsp at the beginning and then re-saved my clip project .vsp. The next step was where I was having issues. I attempted to load these finalized clip .vsp's into the Batch Convert feature and they were all rejected. Strangely though, if I justed opened the finalized clip .vsp, I could save it to a .mpg file with no problem. But, attempting to load the same .vsp into the batch convert gave me a file format mismatch error.
I am not sure I fully understand why yet, but I think I have figured out what is causing the problem. While Batch Convert can handle my simple .vsp's when they only refer to a .mpg, Batch Convert can not handle my complex .vsp's that include both the reference to a .mpg and also a reference to another .vsp (which in turn references other .mpg's, etc.).
So, the next work around, is that I first have to Batch Convert all my lead-in title .vsp's since they are simple (not complex) and save them as .mpg's. Once that is done, then my finalized clip .vsp now only refers to two .mpg's as opposed to a .mpg and to a .vsp.
So, my problems appear to stem from me "nesting" the .vsp's.
I wouldn't be surprised if one of the foundational concepts being promoted in this forum is that you can't nest .vsp's. But I missed it and it caused a lot of frustration (frustrating especially since it appears to work when opening these files as opposed to batching them).
Since I could still greatly benefit from being able to import DVD's directly, if you, Ken, or others stumble onto something, please let me know. Also, if you can add further insight into nesting which would allow me to do complex .vsp's let me know also.

That is quite an interesting workflow and I must admit I have never tried placing vsp files into the library.
Have you ever considered upgrading to MediaStudio Pro. It appears to me that you are an advanced user of VideoStudio and might enjoy the more powerful features of VideoStudio's bigger brother.

I'm glad to hear I wasn't the only one who had never tried inserting VSP files in the library/
Konan -- I can't comment on Batch Convert either, as I have never used that as well! I always tend to do such things manually.
As for Steve's suggestion about upgrading to MSP8, I think it is a good one. Amongst the extra features in it, I seem to recall that indeed there is the facility precisely to nest VSPs. But Steve will be able to better comment on that than I can as I have not used MSP much.
