I have made numerous DVDs with VS10+ using the recommended procedure to create MPEGs in separate projects and then put them together in a new "DVD authoring" project. So I'm used to the amount of time the steps take. Today I had a project that was taking a very long time to create the ISO file.
The only difference from my other projects is that I selected a max 6000Kbps rate instead of 8000, but I was careful to change this in both my MPEG template and the DVD authoring settings. I also made sure that "Do not convert compliant MPEGs" was checked.
So when doing the burn to the ISO file, the upper progress bar said "Convert title" and the lower bar said "Converting video of title". The lower bar went up to 99% and the upper bar went to 16% and then just stayed there. It still said "Convert title" on the upper bar, but it continued to churn away, staying at 16%. I could see my external USB drive light flashing, and this is where my MPEG files are stored, so it must have been reading the MPEG file, but after 20 minutes it was still just churning away with no change in the progress bars.
I was afraid that it was re-converting my MPEG file for some reason, so I cancelled the burn and checked all my settings. Tried it again with the same result, so I even re-rendered my MPEG file in case something wasn't right. Finally, with no progress after all this, I just left it running and went out to run some errands. When I got back it had finished, but I have no idea how long it took. The resulting DVD looks fine, but I am not sure if it re-processed my MPEG file or not.
Anyone have any idea what could have been going on here? At this time, I only had one 800 meg MPEG file to try. I'd hate to think how long it will take when I add my other videos! And just a couple of weeks ago I did a DVD with six videos on it where the ISO was created in about 15 minutes or so (but at 8000Kbps).
Very slow "burn" to ISO file

It was obviously re-rendering your MPEG for some reason.
Because you have "Do not convert compliant MPEG files" selected then the problem is in the original file. for some reason it is not DVD compliant.
There are more things to compliancy than just the bit rate, double check the frame size, frame rate and all other settings.

That's what I figured, but darned if I can see a difference in the settings, although the settings in the DVD Wizard are presented a little differently from the way they show up when creating an MPEG.sjj1805 wrote:It was obviously re-rendering your MPEG for some reason.
I think what I'll try is going back to my usual settings, which are mostly the product defaults and I know they work. I was only changing the bit-rate for space savings, and it really is not that big of a deal.
