VS10: How to Edit in PAL AVI?

Post by galleywoodman »

I've been using VS since v5 - but just upgraded from 9 -> 10.

I'm in the UK, so PAL is my tv format. For quality purposes, I prefer to edit the catured video in AVI format.

No doubt I'm doing something wrong here, but my problem is that VS10 wont let me select PAL + AVI as an editting format. The only option being NTSC + AVI.

I've no-doubt I'm doing something wrong - any clues?

This is real strange... :?

There are numerous users from the PAL area that have not reported this problem. So first I'll ask, when you installed VS, did you make sure to select your country and PAL? I've checked through my version, to see if this can be changed after installing, and can not find a means to do so. I know that a concern is that the program seems to default to NTSC, basically because it is developed in Taiwan, which is NTSC area. However, when you install the program as you know, you set the region and / or if you use PAL or NTSC..

You might try reinstalling and making sure that you set it accordingly..

Yes I have no problem at all recording and editing as PAL - but I did do as Ron said and made sure I selected PAL as my default when installing the programme.

but I am a little confused - if you connect a PAL camcorder and set the project properties correctly - how does it not capture PAL from a PAL camcorder - are you sure you haven't got an NTSC camcorder.

Try this - open 'File >> Project properties' - make sure 'Microsoft AVI files ' is showing across the centre and click on 'Edit' at the bottom, In the new dialogue box which opens click on the 'General' tab - Change the 'Frame Rate' to 25fps and the frame size to 720 x 576 - now click on the AVI tab and change the Audio Format to 'DV Audio - PAL'

Click OK which will return you to the first properties menu - does the display box now show a PAL setting ?? - if yes try capturing.

Thanks guys. So, I did a sanity check and re-installed (making certain that I selected 'UK'). No change as far as VS10 goes.

Just to be clear; My camcorder is absolutely PAL - and it will capture in PAL. It's only when I change the 'Edit File Format' to AVI - that the only option presented is NTSC :(

FYI: I'm picky in that I prefere to edit in AVI format (rather than mpeg) to avoid compression until the burn phase!

None-the-less, have now editted the preferences as suggested by Brian - and it seems to work.

I'm going to be nervous now until I sucessful get to finally complete at least a quick test project - Thanks again...

When you "capture" from a DV camcorder, all you do is copy the data from your tape (I asume it to be tape because you have not stated otherwise). The format is DV AVI, Not PAL not NTSC, DV. Whether or not that data is suitable for PAL or NTSC is given by the frame size and frame rate of the footage.

What are the source file properties, your project settings and what do you want to output?

1. Open VideoStudio
2. File | Project Properties
3. Edit File format.

For AVI Files.
Edit | General - Set the Frame Rate, Aspect Ratio and then on the
AVI tab select an appropriate Compression format.

For MPEG Files
Edit - Compression Tab | Media Type.
Select either PAL DVD or NTSC DVD as required.

Yes but did you ALSO change to PAL on that same installation page - only changing to UK is not sufficient.
