Still image capture is distorted in Video 10

Post by gandrew55 »

I have a new Canon XH A1 HDV video camera. Shooting in HDV 16:9 format, still image captures save to the Image library but open up distorted, as if they are "squished" into a 4:3 ratio. I have the preference set for "Keep Aspect Ratio" but this doesn't seem to matter. This is happening both with stills taken from captures directly from DV tape and from the hard drive version.
Any ideas?
MY computer does properly recognize the Canon HDV connection and it captures fine...Dell Latitude 620, Win XP SP2, Intel Centrino Duo 1.66 GHZ w/1 GB RAM.
Thanks!

This subject was briefly discussed here:

I'm not so sure the conclusions are correct. For me stills capturing from HD 16:9 footage is a mistery. Some times I get correct result, more often the result is incorrect.

I don't know if your camera is 1440x1080 non-square pixels, I suspect it is.

I would appreciate an experienced VS10+ user taking some time explaining how to capture stills from HD footage.

I have not done an exhaustive search for a solution to this problem yet.
I experienced the same thing (16:9 format, save still image... it comes up [close to, but not exactly as] a 4:3 image). When I placed it in an overlay track, I saw the compaction, when I placed it in the main video track, I see the same thing.
I changed the [Preference/Edit/Image Resampling Option] from "keep aspect ratio" to "fit project size" and the problem went away.
Go figure.

The Preference "Keep Aspect Ratio" does not operate correctly on images that are captured from 16x9 video. When you put them in the Edit timeline with 16x9 video, they do show up squished. But if you select that image and then select FitToProjectSize, it will stretch out to match your project Property settings, (which should have already been set to 16x9).

I also discovered (to my surprise) that the KeepAspectRatio and FitToProjectSize properties can be set independently for any object in the Edit Timeline. This permits some images that were shot in 4:3 to coexist with images that were captured from 16x9 video, in the same project - at the correct aspect ratio. :D
