ADVICE TO A NEWCOMER

Post by billyb »

I've just started using the trial version of movie factory 5 and had a few problems with it causing computer crashes when capturing analogue video. With perseverence I have managed to capture analogue video from both the TV tuner and composite facilities on my Nvidia FX 5200 card. One problem is that although the sound comes through the picture does not show on the monitor. Is this normal? I find it a big inconvienience and can the video be monitored in the same way as in Microsofts Movie Maker package. I'm currently using nvidia 84.21 forceware driver as the later ones just give a green screen!

I've also tried burning video captured in microsoft movie maker to DVD using the movie factory 5 with disapointing results the dvd is very blury when played on a TV dvd.
Am I destined to get poor results with my current equipment and if so can anyone recommend the equipment I need to improve matters with this software? My current requirement is to convert old analogue video to DVD format.

I don't know anything about the Nvidia card...

Analog capture is the trickiest part of digital video. Some capture hardware just doesn't work well with some capture software. I always recommend using the special capture software that came with your hardware. (My theory is that capture device-drivers are not as standardized as more common computer peripherals, like printers.) Did the Nvidia come with software?

What format are you capturing to? The idea is to capture to DV (AVI/DV), or MPEG-2 at a medium to high bitrate. (A bitrate of 5000kbps is a good starting point.) If you capture to MPEG-2, don't do anything that will re-encode the MPEG. If you capture to DV, choose a medium to high bitrate when you make the DVD.

Here's a list of capture devices that work with Movie Factory.

The ATI All-In-Wonder cards are very popular.

I have a Hauppauge card, and the quality is quite good. I use the Hauppauge software to capture, and Ulead to author & burn the DVD. (I can see and hear the program during capture.) However, it's MPEG only and I sometimes get problems when I edit MPEGs... If there's no editing, everything is great.

Thanks for the advice DVDDoug,

I've played around a bit more with the Ulead s/w and the PC resolution settings and although it will capture the analogue picture to MPEG (DVD) It will not display the picture both prior to and during the capture process. Once the capture is complete and the program moves on to the next window then the picture and sound displays correctly.
The only problem with this is that if you have a long tape with no sound and you only want to capture sections of it it is impossible to find the sections without first finding them on a TV setup.
I'm puzzled as to why the program can capture and replay the analogue but can't display the picture during and before the capture process.

Incidentaly an earlier version of Movie Factory was supplied with the Nvidia card.

Also can you give further advice on the MPEG settings you suggest 5000 as a good starting point mine was set to 7000. I reset it to 5000 but this had no effect on the display issue.

Thanks again
