Slow motion on Movie

Post by Bryan F »

Is there a way in VS 10 to slow motion a portion of the movie?

Hi Bryan F,

Yes, highlight the clip in the timeline you wish to apply the slow motion to. In the Control Panel above the timeline, click on the Video tab, and then click on the Playback Speed option. A dialog box will appear that will let you adjust the slow motion (or fast motion as well) in three different ways, by percentage, by using the horizontal jog slider, or by inputing the desired time duration in the digital clock. There is a preview button at the bottom of this dialog box that will let you sample your adjustment. If you like it, you're set. If not, you can adjust the playback speed further until you are satisfied with it.

Please note however, the slow motion effect will be applied to the entire video clip. If you only want a portion of a video clip to play in slow motion, cut (using the scissors button below the Preview Window) the video clip in the desired area (both at the beginning point and at the ending point). This will transform your original video clip from one clip into three clips (that is if the desired section is in the middle somewhere - you will have two clips if it is at the very beginning or at the very end). Now apply the slow motion effect to this newly cut clip. There is no need to apply any transitions between the three new cut clips. This way you will have a seamless flow between the three clips, as if you had never made the cuts in the first place.

:) :)
Cheers,

Bryan P.

Bryan F,

I know this can be a bit overwhelming sometimes. Let me try to explain this a different way. Let¡¦s say you have three video clips in your timeline, video clip #1 (60 sec. long), video clip #2 (90 sec. long) and video clip #3 (45 sec. long). Let¡¦s say you want to apply a slow motion effect to a 15 sec. segment inside video clip #1. You determine that the beginning point where you want slow things down is 20 sec. into video clip #1. You want to stop the slow motion effect 35 sec. into video clip #1 (15 sec. duration). Now click and highlight video clip #1 in the timeline and go to the beginning frame of this clip. Click and drag the jog slider below the preview window to the 20 sec. point of video clip #1 and then click on the scissors button to cut the clip at this location. Then click and drag the jog slider to the 35 sec. point of video clip #1 and click on the scissors button again. Now video clip #1 has been cut into three separate video clips, parts A, B and C. Click and highlight part B (the 15 sec. segment) and apply the slow motion effect by clicking the Playback Speed button in the Options Control panel ¡V Video tab, and adjusting your slow motion amount according to your desire. Put no transition between clips A and B and no transition between clips B and C. When you playback the video of these three clips, they will playback seamlessly. You won¡¦t be able to tell that you cut video clip #1 in 2 locations. When clip segment A finishes and clip segment B begins, you will see the slow motion effect start to happen, then when clip segment B ends and clip segment C begins, it will play again at normal speed. If you want to slow down the beginning portion or an end portion of a video clip, you only need to make one cut and then follow the same procedures. I hope this explains this process a little better.
Cheers,

Bryan P.
