What is the best format for a dvd with 25 music videos?

Post by Rainet »

I am about to make a dvd full of music videos i recorded off the tv. What would be the best way to go about the format?

I won't be using a full motion menu, (maybe intro motion). Will use thumb menu. There will be about 25 vidoes

Video: variable - kbps ????
Upper field first
standard 720x480
video rate - ??
audio format - ??

Obviously i want the best video and audio quality but i dont want it to take 5 hours. I would like to use dolby digitial i think?
But im a bit confused with so many options in the drop down menu. With all this HQ..GQ..LP etc..can someone help me the perfect set up for 25 music videos which should be under 2 hours. Any help will be great!! :D

The number of videos isn't at all important -- what matters is the total duration of the videos.

You need to take the total duration and run that through a bitrate calculator to figure out what bitrate you have to use to get the video to fit on one disk. AC-3 audio will help greatly in making that happen; MPEG2 audio is not part of the NTSC DVD standard, and LPCM wastes too much disk space.

If the total duration adds up to more than 90 minutes, then I would consider 2-pass VBR encoding to get the best quality. Otherwise, simply encode using CBR at whatever bitrate is required to make everything fit.

I checked a few of the video properties, most have dolby digital, a couple for the life of me have mpeg2. Would it be ok if i use dolby digital (AC-3) for all?

The 2 pass conversion theres a check off box in the project settings and also under compression setting?

And what about audio bit rate 256?
dvd-vr-compliant?
Do i also uncheck the Do not compliant MPEG files?
video rate - 8000?
audio bit rate - 256 (dolby)?

Im sorry im really new at this. I keep reading the manual but im still a bit stuck. sigh...

The videos add up to 90 to 105 min. If you or anyone can give me a run down on what to be checked and checked off that would be great. I'm making a christmas gift for my family and sadly its a family full of videophile nuts!

Yes, simply select AC-3 for the audio, and UVS will convert the files that are not compliant with your selection.

Go to

http://dvd-hq.info/Calculator.html

and plug in the numbers appropriate for your project. Set the Audio Format to custom, and enter 256 for the bitrate. You'll find that 5400Kbps (either CBR or average for VBR) will let 105 minutes of video fit on one single-layer DVD.

So do i use the two pass encode or the two pass conversion? What is DVD-VR compliant?

And lastly, the media type quality is set at 80. Should i raise it or leave it alone?

I know understanding 3/4 of this. I downloaded the bitrate caculator.

So i take it , it doesn't matter if i use HQ or GQ if im setting all this manually.

I am useing Videostudio 10 plus.
