I have the trial of VS10. I am trying to dissolve on clip into another. I don't see any transition that will let me do this. Can someone point me in the right direction? If this can be done, I also would like to know if i can control how much overlap there is between the 2 clips.
In my other video editor, I can simply drag one clip back over another one in the timeline, and this creates a dissolve. I can control the amount of overlap by the amount I drag to second clip.
Also, in the regular transitions, is there a way I can control the duration of the transition?
Thanks.

Don't know about the trial version, but in the full version the dissolve (called Cross-fade) is found in the FX sub-folder of Transitions, along with fade to black.
And you control the length of transitions either in File > Preferences, by setting the default time that applies to them (along with selecting a default transition if you want to). Or else, by highlighting a transition in the timeline, you simply adjust the little digital clock for how long it is to play: 1 second, 2 or longer... The same clock is also used to change the length of things like still images or colour panels.

The fade in and out buttons on the main VS interface are for audio, not video.
To do a fade-in or fade-out from or to black or another colour, simply insert a colour matte panel from the drop down menu which appears when you click on the little window immediately above the first clip in the library panel (top centre of screen). Select 'Color' then the colour you want to insert and drag and drop it to either before the first video clip or after the last. Set the time you want to fade in from that colour, and insert a cross fade between the colour panel and the video (or in the case of fade-out you can also use fade to black if you use a black panel).
