Jagged edges in moving scenes

Post by fgrodek »

I am having a problem when capturing from a mini-DV camera into Ulead VisualStudio 7 SE Basic: in all lateral-moving scenes the vertical edges (columns, walls, etc.) appear stepped or jagged!
Please help! Thanks.

What format are you capturing in? Mini DV is best captured using the DV format, editing in the same format, and then converting it to DVD-compliant mpeg-2 if you aim to burn a DVD. (I hope you realise that VS7 SE Basic will not allow you to burn a disc... It is otherwise old and you would be well advised to upgrade to VS10.)

Jagged edges is usually a sign that you are using the wrong field order. If you are, for instance, capturing direct to mpeg-2, the field order from a mini DV camera should be Field Order A. If your computer is not up to the demanding task of capturing direct to mpeg-2, you will also get erratic captures.

Finally, if you are indeed capturing to DV format, then check the Options cogwheel icon on the left side of the Capture screen. It should set to Type 1 DV Encoder. If it is set to Type 2, change it to Type 1. Again, if your computer is not up to capturing Type 2, you will get erratic, jerky video and/or audio.
