Program Crash
Hi. New user to PhotoImpact. After installing, I can open the program under my own Windows account, but it crashes when I try to open it in another account on the same computer. Is this a known problem, or am I just being stupid? Any info appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry, heinz-oz, this is a known problem. See also this thread: http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=17927
It's the file u32Tif.fio in the folder FIO who can cause the crash. I have the same problem, that with some user accounts PI12 works, with others it chrashes - even if all accounts have the same (administrator) user rights!

Oliver

I agree, this problem is known to you, that doesn't make it universally known though. I still maintain that this problem, as it seems, has to do with Windows XP user right policies, at least to me. If the program works in some user accounts and not in others, even though all have the same administrator rights, does not indicate to me that this is a PI fault. In your particular case, I would rather suspect a vital service being stopped by your tweaks. I find it rather peculiar that you chose to have separate user accounts for security reasons but all have administrator rights.oglitsch wrote:Sorry, heinz-oz, this is a known problem. As you may know the first account which hackers try to hack (or by viruses/trojans/what-ever) is the administrator account. This is the reason for me to never work as administrator. But I need the admin rights in my daily work to install software or do other tasks requiring admin rights.I find it rather peculiar that you chose to have separate user accounts for security reasons but all have administrator rights.
Back to our PI12 problem: I argue the converse. It's a problem of this particular u32Tif.fio-file! In other words: why does PI12 crash if this filter is present in the FIO folder and not, when i remove it? And why do the other filters (all files with the extension .fio in the same FIO folder) not affect PI12?
In my opinion a software must be working for all users on a computer, independant of their user rights (except for installation, of course).

You may find that it suffices for a hacker to find any user account with administrator rights to do their deads but that is besides the point.
I just verified that my system does have this file present and yet it doesn't crash. Why not if it is a fault of this file and PI12?
Do you mean to tell me that the user accounts on your machine which work do not have this file present? AFAIK, this file resides in the ..\Ulead Systems\.. folder and is user independent.

I must agree with Heinz. I also find the same filter in the FIO folder, and yet to experience any crashes by PI-12. Now to take this one step further, in using my video editing profile, where I have every service that is absolutely not necessary shut down. I also use a separate user profile. This file is present there, and again no problems with PI.
So it does not appear to be a problem with PI or that specific file.

I would like to come back to this problem with u32Tif.fio: I still have the problem that PI12 crashes when trying to load this file. PI11, which uses the exact same filter (u32Tif.fio), works perfectly. I also tried to copy u32Tif.fio from the PI11 into the directory of PI12 - no chance, the system crashes. As a next trial I changed in the registry the security settings of this file to full access for anyone - same problem as before.
I still consider that PI12 itself is the problem by using a different method to load this filter which, in some circumstances and environments, let the system crash.
htchien - could you get some info from Ulead? As I can see in different forums I am not the only user getting this problem with u32Tif.fio in PI12...
