VS7 vs. VS8 and AC3 decoding

Post by dgoldan »

Okay, I do a lot of clip editing from commercial DVDs for educational purposes. With MF2 I can import a DVD and it will convert into mpg files. I can play the files through MediaPlayer, but because they are AC3 encoded, will not play in VS7 or on other machines.

Here's the question. I don't need to re-encode back into AC3 for output, but I need to be able to edit in VS and save to a standard mpg. It's obvious that VS7 doesn't do this. Does VS8, or will I be wasting my money to upgrade only for this purpose?

Thanks,
Dan

Version 8 on it's own will NOT decode or encode AC-3 Dolby Digital sound,
if you wish to do both you must also purchase a Dolby Digital plug in from Ulead and you do that here :-
http://www.ulead.com/store/vs/runme.htm#plugin

There is however a FREE plug in obtainable here :-
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/AC3_Filter.htm
this will decode but not encode - I personnally have never used the free one so cannot comment on it's functioning.

Thanks Brian. I did download the free decoder, but couldn't figure out how it works with VS7. Any hints?

No as I said I have never used it - I believe you have to export the file from UVS - then decode - then import the file back into UVS - perhaps one of the others who has used it can help.
