MPEG File size

Post by anniebrion »

I have captured a movie from my freeview card.

Format: MPG (DVD-PAL) 720x576 CBR 6500 16:9 MPEG Audio

Now when I try to convert the file with the only changes are 352x576 and Dolby 2.0 why does the file size get bigger than the original? I have halved the resolution so would expect the video portion to shrink by 50%.

What is going on!!

BTW I using Video Studio 10

As far as I am aware -- and of course I stand to be corrected -- the frame format size makes no difference to the end size of the file. The main factor affecting this is the bitrate used (plus of course audio file size). In this case, mpeg layer 2 audio is more or less the same size as Dolby dual channel stereo. So that leads me to ask what bitrate you produced the new file at? If it is above 6500 kbps, then you will have a bigger file, period. You can tell us the properties by right clicking on the new file within Video Studio and copying down the Properties section.

As I said, the only changes made were frame size and audio format.

The bit rate was left at CBR 6500

I'm now testing with a bit rate of VBR 3000 to see what difference that makes.

Hi Annie

Can we just double check your video file properties.

Post the video file properties to the forum.

From file ¡Vpreferences-tick show messages when inserting first video¡K¡K¡K

Start a new project and insert the first captured file, from the pop up box select details.
Copy and paste the video properties to the forum.
Repeat with the converted file. (you will have to start a new project )
