16:9 Instead of 3:4

Post by kok_warlock »

How do I encode and burn in the Movie Factory 3, in the format widescreen 16:9, instead of the default 4:3, because it always distort films in 16:9 to 4:3, when I make the dvds.

If you have applied the latest patches you can create a custom template using the 16:9 aspect ratio.
After creating the template then apply it as the "Project Properties".
(Gear Icon bottom of screen, -> Change Mpeg settings)

Hope this helps,

shspvr: I am not sure what you meant by all DVD's are 4:3 and not really 6:9, but that site didn't help any, and I didn't feel like sorting through it.

maddrummer3301: I thought I had the updated patches, and that 16:9 aspect ratio is still "grayed out". I'll check again for an update on MF3. I know that it is non-functional in MF2. Thanks.

DVDs clearly do not all come in 4:3 aspect. Many are even wider than 16:9 eg Matrix. I can't do it within MF3...but I make movies in another program (Pinnacle 9 which imports and exports 16:9 footage) and then burn those to DVD with ULEAD. They come out as perfect widescreen films, apart from the menu.

Are you selecting "DVD" as the project in the very beginning?

When I start MF3 I set the working folder then set the "Project Properties".
Then click on the gear icon on the left bottom of the screen and
select "Custom". From the next screen my version gives the 2 choices
of 4:3 or 16:9.

The only time my version of MF3 has the option grayed out is if I select
VCD or SVCD as the project when first starting out.

Using MovieFactory3 Disc Creator.

Hope this helps,

sk all DVD are 4:3 even Matrix see below
Image
The only video clip that ture in 16:9 are HDTV format and they are usely something 1920x1080 or 1280x720 or some like that 98% of Home DVD can not handel that high of resolution.
There a tweak in IFO that need be edit in order for it display which basely tell the Home DVD Player or what ever it is to rescale the clip for dsiplay.
Spent some time look a round Doom9.com forum or took look at How to they have there.

You should visit the following links:
Aspect Ratio and resolution q&a's.

http://www.boxlight.com/guides/dictiona ... pect_Ratio

http://www.boxlight.com/guides/guide_aspect_ratio.asp

Quoted:
DVD movies there is a formatting problem to consider. Many are wider than 16:9. For example, Dances with Wolves, Tombstone, U-571, American Beauty, and Star Wars/Phantom Menace (to name a few) are all 2.35:1, not 1.78:1. So when you display these movies on a 16:9 screen you will have black bars at the top and bottom of the screen, each bar amounting to about 12% of the picture height. The bars are not as large as they would be on a 4:3 screen, but they can be visible nevertheless.

Interesting. Movies like Matrix are of course 16:9 Enhanced (2.35:1) but presumably are encoded as 4:3 because of the black bar info? However, some popular camcorders like the Sony DCRHC40 can film in True Widescreen mode.

I have Version 2 SE. I have the same problems with the aspect ratio. I have DVD Project selected, but the aspect ratio selection is "greyed-out" and cannot be changed.

if your original mpeg2 file is 16:9, then mf shouldnt change that. The 16:9 flag is in the mpeg file, so as long as mf isnt re encoding the file, then it should work in 16:9

some mpeg capturing software, like winfast pvr, wont actually set the 16:9 flag. This isnt a major problem though as you can "patch" any mpeg2 file using dvdpatcher from here:

http://www.wincesoft.de/index.html

when you load the clip into mf, click the info button on the left and it will say if the original file is 16:9 or 4:3
