It¡¦s been a while since I¡¦ve had a chance to visit the forum to learn from others¡¦ questions. I too am basically happy with PS4. The product I created for my family is quite impressive (or at least my computer illiterate inlaws are impressed) if I do say so myself but I do have a couple more questions. I scanned in about 650 pictures to make a family tree slide show. There are 9 separate slides. I wonder if the reason it continually freezes on me is because it is so large?... I save after about every 3 actions now. A friend purchased the same program after she saw my product. As she is building her slideshow (into the 200s now), she is having problems with freezing and kicking out of the program as well. It seems to be in the audio section mostly. In reading other people¡¦s questions, Michael says PS4 does not have any patches posted yet. Incidentally, I have not had a problem burning to DVD at this point.
Second question. I will be getting a new computer soon. If I backup this slideshow file to a DVD (since it¡¦s 650 pictures and probably won¡¦t fit on a CD), will that work once I get the new computer set up? If I¡¦m backing up that file, it is still a ¡§work in process¡¨ and not the final product as when I burn to a DVD.
As my children are young, I¡¦d like to have plenty of years to scan their baby pictures in and create work in process slide shows. Then when it comes to graduation/wedding time years down the road, the leg work will be done. I DO NOT want to burn a final slideshow, just keep the work in process to continually edit throughout the years.
So I guess I¡¦m asking the best procedure to do this. If I¡¦m backing up the file, I only have to back up that one file? There are no other cryptic files that need to be saved as well? Remember, I¡¦m not a computer guru. I¡¦ve been thinking about buying a jump drive to save work/pictures on. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for organizing slides.
I used another basic program that came with my camera. I purchased PS4 after I wanted to start this huge family tree. If I am understanding correctly, the pictures I use are ¡§linked¡¨ to the slideshow. Once I move/rename the picture, that link is lost. I accidentally found that out in the old program. I assume the same is true with PS4. So if I am backing up the file, will those pictures be saved on the DVD/jump drive as well? Because as I get my new computer and ¡§clean¡¨ out the directories, I don¡¦t want to lose those links. Yes, probably a dumb question for most of you, but not me!
I have not contacted tech support about the freezing. I thought I¡¦d check here first.
Thank you for any answers to my many questions!

Conrad,
When you save a project in PS4, your media (photos, clips, music) are not embedded in the project file... just "links" to the locations where you've stored your media. Although I've never tried to do so, it might be possible to re-link to your project from a different computer assuming all of your original media was carried over to the new PC. Lacking a definitve answer, I would experiment before deleting the files from your current system. Re the backup media, you can use DVD, CD, flash drive, external HDD, or any means of storage to transfer the DPS project file and/or media files between computers.
As for updating exisitng presentations, what you'd want to do is save a project file just prior to burning your current show. This saved DPS file will enable you to re-open, add-on, or revise your project from the point at which it was saved whenever you wish. After each major revision, save the latest version of your project using a unique file name (incorporating a date for example eg; "family_tree_10-05-06") and do not delete the previous (earlier) project files. Over time, you'll be able to revise your projects from a variety of starting points depending on which project file you choose to work with. Basically, you'll just be adding-on from the previous "save" point and then burning the revised project in it's entirety to DVD.
Another method of archiving shows is to output them as video clips through PS4's "Save Slideshow As Video File" option on the "2 Theme" > "Slideshow" tab of the UI. These clips can be stored on your PC or optical media however the saved clips contain only the presentaion itself (no menu content) and cannot be later edited through PS4. They can however be used as content in a new project.
As for crashing issues, there are so many possible causes however I wouldn't necessarily assume the size of your project is to blame. The more speific info you can provide, the better we can help you. BTW, Ulead has recently added a PS4 patch to their support site however the only specified fix is related to working with flash video. That said, there may be other problems that were addressed but not mentioned in the patch description. You might want to contact tech-support and see what they have to offer.
Good luck!
