Unusual DVD creation problem when using "RP"

Post by gordonwd »

I ran into this problem during the time that this forum was down, so finally had to solve it myself, but it was driving me nuts for a while.

I was working on a DVD project using the usual RP, rendering my videos individually then using a separate project to do the menus and burning. This was an iterative process where I added the videos one at a time, burnt a trial DVD-RW to see how it all looked, then maybe went back and made another video or worked some more on one that was already in the menu.

Suddenly, I had a couple of videos where the sound would quit partway thru when played from the DVD. The MPEG file would play all the way, but in either my family-room DVD player or on the PC, the finished DVD would not play right. I reinstalled VS10+ without the service pack, re-rendered and reburnt several times, and the problem remained.

Finally, I happened to be in the final DVD project wizard again and clicked on one of the thumbnails for a video that was having the problem. I then saw that the trim handles in the preview window were not all the way apart, even though I had never touched them. So I dragged them out where they belonged, did the same on a couple other videos, and the DVD burnt and played correctly at last!

I think what happened is that the project file "remembered" the length of the video when I originally added it to the project. I later went back and worked on that video, adding some footage and increasing its length. Then I went back to the DVD-creation project it got confused as to what the length of the video really was. It was strange, however, that it truncated the sound but not the picture.

Anyway, all's well that ends well, and the finished DVD is a masterpiece!
