Visual C++ runtime error

Post by BruceD »

After several hundred videos, haven't used MF3 since last December. When I tried to create DVD folders for a 2 hour movie on a hard disk with over 100GB of free space, within a few seconds get "DVDMF.exe caused C++ runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Contact support for assistance".
Checked support for updates found two, but when I tried to install got message that MF3 wasn't installed.
Uninstalled, deleted MF3 folders and re-installed. Updates loaded OK, but still get error message. Other strange problem, XP-Pro System shows SP-2 installed, but I have SP2 blocker on this system. And SP2 does not show in Uninstall Software List. Only thing done since last use of MF3 is install Adobe Premier Elements and Photoshop Elements. Did remove Adobe Premier Pro 1.5 prior to installing Elements. Re-install of MF3 should have fixed any related problems.
Several security updates from MS have been installed. I will try installing and removing SP2 (have had trouble with this before). Any other ideas??
NEW - Overnight converted AVI file to MPG - now the problem is gone but never had this with AVI files before.

You need to install Adobe products before installing Ulead products, this is because the encoders in both Ulead and Adobe are from the same company, MainConcept.

Hope this helps.

HT,
Thanks for the info, I follow the logic, but wouldn't removing and reinstalling MF3 have accomplished the same thing? I know there was a fix for MF3 when it was installed on a machine with Adobe Premier, and both programs worked fine after I installed that. Premier chewed up gobs of disk space, that's why I removed it. Premier Elements is a little weak in many areas, so I still prefer MF3. I'm using 4 machines, but only 2 have Ulead products, so I may just move the Adobe stuff to one of the other machines. I use a 200GB SATA removable drive to transfer videos between the machines which makes it easy to try different software on the same video data.
Thanks again for your reply.

You might need to reinstall Ulead after you remove Adobe in your system as well for Adobe might remove the common encoder files.

BTW, can you list the runtime error message with more detials??

Hope this helps.

Still a problem

Post by BruceD »

Uninstalled Adobe Premier Elements, Sonic MyDVD (never used) and Ulead MF3. While all three do use MainConcept encoders, the encoders are all named differently, so I can't see any way they could interfere with one another. Ulead = ulesmpeg.ax, Sonic = sonicesmpeg.ax and Adobe = adesmpeg.ax. Adobe and Sonic didn't change the copyright, still giving credit to Main Concept, Ulead is claiming copyright credit.
Anyhow uninstalled all three, removed the associated folders reinstalled just MF3, and I still get the C++ Runtime error on AVI files. Ulead DVD player also is not working correctly. It has a flashing bar about 1.5" wide across the bottom, and keeps telling me the video resolution is too high???
Ulead Video Studio 8 doesn't have a problem encoding the AVI file that causes a problem with MF3 - Still think it's a problem in MF3 somewhere.

There are some other files from MainConcept that Adobe and Sonic did not renamed.

However, from your information I think the encoder files might not be the problem because you can use the file in UVS8.

What's the CODEC used in the AVI file??

Maybe you can consider to contact Ulead Tech Support for this problem.

sorry in advance, new user
i am getting the same exact error message as bruced
i am exporting a 33min avi file from adobe premiere 6.5, and then bringing it into mf3.5
everything goes fine, until i try to burn to a disc, and as soon as it starts rendering the avi file, i get the error message exactly as bruced entered above
i tried everything the same way, but only exported a 4 min avi file from premiere, and it processed it with no problem
is there a limit on the size of an avi file?

i would be more than happy to export my video as a mpg, but my version of premiere only lets me export as mpeg2, not mpeg.

i can bring an mpeg2 file into mf3.5, but it has no audio
i feel like the problem here is due to the face that when prem. exports as m2v., it makes 2 separate files, one video, and one audio

is there a way to add audio files to video files in mf3.5?
or Bruced, can you just tell me what you used to convert avi to mpg??

any help would be greatly appreciated

To add audio to the video in DVD MovieFactory 3.5, you can do the followings.

Select Enhance Video in the Add/Edit Media stage in DVD MovieFactory.
Click on the Audio tab in the Enhance Video dialog.
Click on the Add Audio button to add the audio to the video.

You might need to rename the .m2a to be .mpa so it can be used in DVDMF.

Hope this helps.

okey doke
i added the audio, and went through the menus, it started converting, and got to 33%, then locked up
i'm now converting my .m2v files to mpeg through mf3.5
it's at 19%, this is very, very frustrating
i really like the layout of mf, however, this is getting old
is there a work around for bringing files in from premiere?
when bruced said he converted his avi to mpg, was he possibly talking about doing it under mf?

it takes about an hour to export from premiere into avi or m2v, and now it looks like it's going to take in excess of 1 hr to convert to mpg in mf, it would be nice to go straight to mpg, or straight from m2v, is there a setting i dont know about??
any help would be great

copperheadkid,
The program I used to convert the AVI to MPEG is called TMPGEnc DVD Source Creator from Pegasys.com. While I could have used Ulead's Video Studio 8 or Media Studio Pro to convert, the TMPGEnc program selects the bit rate automatically depending on the size I want in the finished file. I removed Adobe Premier Pro 1.5 from my machine because of similar problems with sound and the fact it filled up a 200GB hard drive with repeat garbage while I was editing a movie. Dobly Digital sound usually is the source of problems with disappearing sound. If you are just capturing with premier, why don't you just capture with Movie Factory 3??
I'm still looking for the C++ runtime error.
Good Luck!!

Copperheadkid,

IT'S CALLED TAKING YOUR OWN ADVICE!!!

It occured to me after my last post that I too had captured my movie using Adobe Premier Elements, the new package from Adobe. I also know that AVI (Audio-Video-Interface) is not always interchangeable between programs Type 1 vs Type 2 not withstanding. I was surprised that Premier Elements had captured the file as a Type 2, and I edited out the commercials using Premier Elements, where I normally would have used Media Studio Pro.
To make a long story short, I tried capturing the video (on vhs) using Movie Factory 3 and guess what??? It encodes fine, no C++ runtime error.
There is something in the Adobe AVI file triggering the problem.

A final chapter to the problem of C++ Runtime Error:

To test the theory, I captured the same video using Adobe Premier Elements and Ulead Media Studio Pro. Adobe's Premier Elements program does not give the user the ability to change the AVI type, it simply records as Type 2.
I don't remember if Premier Pro has the ability to change capture types, if it does one might try capturing a video as Type 1 to see if this also causes the problem with MF3.
Using Media Studio I captured the file in both Type 1 and Type 2 format. Both of these files worked fine in DVD Movie Factory 3. However the Adobe file, unedited, created the monster C++ Runtime Error in MF3.
I then took the Adobe file and loaded it into Media Studio (no problems) and then converted it to Type 1. Not only does it work fine in MF3, but it is also usable in Premier Elements.
So if you want to use DVD Movie Factory 3, you will need to use something other than Adobe's Premier to capture the video, or use some program to make a Type 1 video out of it.
Hope this helps anyone out there.
