This is probably easier to do then to explain if you are using VS 10!
1) Once you have your clip loaded, select the audio tab (top of the screen)
2) Play the clip to locate the word you want to ¡§delete¡¨
3) You may want to zoom in using the + button under the playback windows so that it will be easier to select the audio
4) You should see a straight line on the story board and right under it a graphic representation of the audio in your clip. Click on it to get the focus
5) Now if you place your mouse on the straight line you will see your cursor change to a straight arrow up
6) Click on the straight line were the word start, a little square should appear on the straight line
7) Move your cursor you left of the square and click again a second square should appear
Repeat step 6 and 7 were the word of your clip finish
9) Now drag the two inner squares down (one at the time) so that the rubber band (line) square is just at the bottom of the story board. Do go to low as it will delete the square!
10) Doing step 9 actually bring the volume level down for the section of the clip between the two squares. It does really delete the ¡§words¡¨ but the result is that you will not hear it anymore.
11) Play back the clip to see if you got it right. If not you can drag the little square left or right as require until you get right.
A totally different approach would be to split the audio from the clip, save to disk and edit it with a wave editor
Hope this helps

This task is easier performed outside of VideoStudio.
Goto the SHARE tab and export the audio. This will create a WAV file.
Now open that WAV file with Audacity (FREE) or a similar sound editor. You can now make a lot of powerful edits to the audio track.
Save the edited audio file. Import that into VideoStudio and mute the existing sound track.

Just wanting to muscle in on saxon's thread here...
I have vs9...and am about to embark on my final stage of one of my projects ( thats before creating a menu etc etc...) ...i too am at the audio stage...and am a little concerned with what ive been reading...all sounds a little complex for my liking.
So, given up with making things too akward for myself...all i want to do is for example, delete a piece of audio, retaining the clip...and in some case perhaps overdubbing from a pervious clip a sound...getting rid of the occasional dog barking, or replacing howling wind with an earlier piece of audio ( where perhaps the actual vidio clip is not worth watching if you see what i mean )
Have attempted various things, thought it was easy enough, sliding down one of the audio tracks etc..or slitting the sound from a clip and getting rid of it...sounds ok on playback..but once burned...seems like i havent delted any sounds at all...so, like Saxon..where am i going wrong..surely it cant be that hard...
