Problem with 16:9 video

Post by hanskru »

I am a VS user since VS5. Now I want to capture 16:9 video from my Sharp DV.
Project properties set to 16:9, than captured video. Captured video (thumb nails) shows on top and bottom black bar.
In the preview screen also a black bar on top and bottom. When I load a captured scene into the preview screen, than I got a double black bar on top and bottom.

Please advise,

brgds hans

Hi Hans

Have a look at my guide ¡¥16:9 a look at widescreen¡¦ from the link below.

It shows how the video should look when using a widescreen frame.

Does your Sharp DV produce proper 16:9 or does it merely add black bars over the 4:3 frame to simulate the 16:9.
If the latter then the library thumbnail will show these bars.

To be sure you need to capture to DV via firewire, Right click a captured file ¡Vselect properties¡Xdo they indicate 16:9 or 4:3

Hope this Helps

Hi Trevor,

Captured video shows properties 16:9 and the thumbnails do show black bar on top and bottom.
This means in mij preview screen I got a double black bar on top and bottom. When DVD burned I a black bar shows also on TV on top and bottom.
So any suggestion?

Thanks anyway for your support,

brgds Hans

Double black bars top and bottom

Post by hanskru »

Hi VS Friends,

I am still struggling with the double black bars.
Captured video properties: Compression: DV Video Encoder Type 1
Attributes 24 bits, 720x576, 16:9
Total frames 1547

Project properties : PAL 25fps
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 720x576, 16:9, 25fps
Lower Field First
DV Video Encoder Type 1.

I also did as mentioned in Trevors video guide.

So I preview screen I have double bars and when burned DVD one black bar on top and bottom remains visible at TV wide screen. Normalle this black bar disppers.

Any more suggestions?

Hi Hans

Sorry to hear you are still having problems.
I have been on holiday and away from the forum,.

Did you solve the problem regarding the 16:9 black bars.

I did a search for your camera specification and it would appear that it does not support true 16:9 widescreen ('anamorphic video').

Your camera only places a bar over the 4:3 screen simulating widescreen.
You should capture to 4:3 ratio.

If you are capturing to DV format (via Firewire) you will not be able to select the aspect ratio,
The information on your camera is transferred to VS.
What you have on the camera is what you get on the pc, no re-coding takes place. You will capture 4:3

The files will be DV-Avi at 13 Gb per hour
