VS8 Commercial DVD Import "Insufficient Disk Space"

Post by FrancisF »

Hi there,
nice to see the forum back in action, so I can get me first post in!

In VS8, I want to import one chapter from a commercial DVD, but I keep getting the msg "cannot import DVD-VR, insufficient disk space" when I use the option File/Import to Timeline.
It first puts a dozen or so clips in the selection window, then asks me to select which ones I want to import, tho each clip seems to be the whole film, i.e. 4GB or so.
The entire DVD is about 4GB in total, according to the properties tab, and I have 14GB space on my HD. Do I need several multiples of the total dvd size in HD space in order to simply import it? Does VS8 expand it by a huge factor or something? Am I missing sth obvious?
I have an Athlon 2600+ with 750 MB RAM.
Thanks in advance
Frank

When it asks you to select a chapter, can we assume you put a check mark only in the little box beside that specific chapter, rather than an overall check in the top box?

Are you sure you are importing a chapter from a commercial DVD? If it is then I think it's not allowed by the copyright law?

If I remember correctly, Ulead products are not allowed to import commercial DVDs due to the copyright law.

Thanks for such prompt replies!

Ken,
I don't get an option to import a single chapter: I select
File/Import Media File to Timeline/Insert DVD/DVD-VR, then choose the DVD from the explore window.
It then puts 20 odd clips into a window (these are not chapters, as there are only 12 on the DVD), and asks me to Select Scenes to Capture. No matter which clip I select, I get the error msg "Cannot import DVD-VR - insufficient disk space."

Htchien,
if you're right, and it's not possible to import commercial DVDs (never stopped DVDShrink :) )then all this is academic! Can anyone confirm this?

Finally, could I hook up a domestic DVD player to the PC and capture a short extract in real time to get round the above problem?

I cannot be violating copyright laws by copying sections of a DVD onto my PC for personal use. If that were the case, then Nero, Toast, Roxio and all the other CD/DVD copying s/w would be in serious trouble.

Secondly, if VS doesn't allow this, why doesn't it say sth like "copyright infringement, import not allowed" instead of "insufficient disk space"?

If what I remember is correct, Nero, Toast, and Roxio also do not allow to import commercial DVDs.

Roxio: http://kb.roxio.com/content/kb/Creator/000022CR

Yes, you can use DVD Shrink to break the copyright protection, however, it's not in our discussion and it's violating the law (so it's on your own).

For the VS error message, I agree it should be corrected. Maybe you can check the update packs for help.
