Create clips from game films
I just purchased VS8 and creating highlight film DVD (NTSC) for parents/players from numerous youth football game films in miniDV. A couple of questions (and have read manual, searched forum):
1. How is best method to create clips of each play? There may be 100 clips I need from 8 tapes. If I pull them into a VSP, can I create separate clips of each play to be used later without having to save each one? Or should I use something like avisynth to create the clips then import into VS8?
2. I have to use another person's camera and computer to "capture" (transfer data) to external hard drive using firewire. Do I have to use VS to do this, or can I simply transfer data to ext. hard drive and then bring it back to my computer to bring into a VSP? Can VS8 pull files from hard drive? If I have to use VS8, can I load it on his computer, capture files, then uninstall while still being able to install VS8 on computer I will be using to complete project (which does not have firewire)? I also travel, can I put files on external hard drive and also load VS8 on another computer (my laptop) without violating license agreement?
3. If I can do a data transfer then later import into VS8, should I use MPEG2 or AVI. I don't need audio from films, either.
4. What would be the best project settings to use?
This may be a bit too much to be asking, but this project was thrown on me and I have about two weeks of nightwork to complete. Quickly ordered Ulead VS8 and scrambling to learn as quickly as possible. Have some experience with WIndows MovieMaker.
Thanks for any and all help!

Not being sarcastic, but why VS8? This version was real buggy, especially when came to audio/video sync. The current released version is VS10 or VS10 Plus.I just purchased VS8
You can load a clip into VS, then use the Multi-Trim found by going to Clip>Multi-Trim. You can choose to discard or retain your selected clips. Then just repeat this process for all your clips.1. Important Note... When you are working on a project, your *.vsp file is not the actual video clips. It is just a file that VS uses to keep track of the clips used, the location of those clips, and everything done to those clips. I highlighted the location, because of how you are going about this. If you move those clips to anywhere else on a harddrive, or move them off onto some other storage means, then VS will have to try to Re-link to those clips. The images (clips) in the timeline are just linked thumbnails to the actual clips. So when you transfer the clips make sure you have access while editing, to where the actual clips are located.
Yes you could probably get away with installing/uninstalling on different computers. However I think this could be a nightmare to have to do this several times. This is just my opinion, I haven't read the EULA recently to see what it says....
It is recommended to use DV-AVI while editing video, then after all editing is complete, go to Share>Create Video File and create a DVD-compatible MPEG file.3. If I can do a data transfer then later import into VS8, should I use MPEG2 or AVI. I don't need audio from films, either.
Your project settings should match the properties of your video files. That should be maintained through-out your workflow. Since you are going to be dealing with a large number of clips, it would be best for you to jot them down at the very begining, so you will be sure to have them remain the same. You can also go to Tools>Make Movie Manager and create a template of your Project settings. That way it will be there for you to choose from.. What would be the best project settings to use?
Recommended Procedures have been developed to help guide you through the mine-field of video editing, as it pertains to Ulead's VideoStudio Programs. They can be viewed here:

Thanks for your help. Why VS8? Didn't know it was flawed (buggy), and was cheap. Audio/video sync is not a problem for this project, thankfully, as I will be adding music anyway. Not a problem, that is, if A/V sync you are referring to is for audio recorded during taping session. If otherwise, I am in trouble.
Thanks again. I'm sure I will have more stupid questions as I progress.

I probably messed up getting VS8, but such is life. One more question--I have to use another person's camera and computer to "capture" (transfer data) using firewire. Do I have to use VS to do this, or can I simply transfer data to computer, copy to external hard drive, and then bring it back to my computer to bring into a VSP?
Thanks
Gregg

Hi
Afaik..The problem with VS 8 and audio sync¡¦ started with the installation of the VS 8 update patch.
If you have used this patch, when you render the project do not use Smart Render.
Share-Create Video File---Selecting ¡¥Options¡¦ in the pop up box will allow you to disable Smart Render.
It has been reported on the forum that by installing the ¡¥latest burner engine update¡¦ corrected the out of sync problem.
I cannot confirm this
If you are not requiring lip sync you should have no problems.
Capturing from another source, you should have no problems, start a new project and import the captured clips.
