How to prevent HD Video from stretching vertically?

Post by Heineken77 »

Hello Again

When I insert a video clip that I've captured through my HDV camera (Sony HDR HC3) how can I preserve the video's appearance?

Here's the issue:

In the preview window, I see an outline of a white box around an inserted video clip (not sure exactly what it means, am I correct in assuming that it is showing what the size of the picture will come out to be?)

Anyhow, if I want the video to fit that white box, i right click the clip and choose 'Original Size' .. Now when I preview it on my computer it looks good. But then when the project is complete and the file is converted to wmv, mp4 or whatever the case may be, the video ends up looking vertically stretched a bit.

I'm assuming this happens because my camera and the video clip is 16:9 HD, so in effect the video is stretching. So my question is, how can I get ulead to do either of the following:

1) Insert black bars above the video clips in order to keep the picture from stretching vertically.

or

2) Have the 'white outlined box' in the preview window in effect crop the video (For example, when I right click on the file and choose original size, the video actually fills the preview window outside of that white box. So is it possible to have the video full sized in the output, minus the video outside of that white box?)

I hope I've explained this well. If you have any further questions please let me know!

Thankyou!

J.C. Hunter is responsible for posting the Recomended Procedures, which is a sticky at the top of this forum. Since the release of VS10 + he updated those procedures to include using VS10+ with HD video. You can read through it here:
