Oy! Don't get us started on this one! In fact you cannot change the file names on capture which has been a sore point for a while with VS!
What I do is capture with the meaningless names to a specific folder then use an app called "Lupas rename 2000" (Free) which can batch convert file names with good control.

Hi
If you are using XP operating system?
XP allows you to ¡¥batch¡¦ rename your files.
I assume on capture you have used the Split Scene option.
This captures the video to Dv-Avi as separate files.
The first of which is named xxxxxx-002.avi
Followed by xxxxxx_002-1.avi and so on
Windows may list these in ¡¥name order¡¦
VS need them in ¡¥Date Created¡¦ order
The difference causes some problems.
From Windows:-
To batch re-name, set the folder in ¡¥Date Created¡¦ order.
Use ¡¥shift click¡¦ to select your files
Right click the FIRST file ¡Vselect rename.
Give it a new name. ('Italy Vacation 2006)
This will rename the list in sequence.
As another option using Video Studio
Do not use ¡¥Split by Scene¡¦ to capture
After capture apply ¡¥Split by Scene¡¦ to the captured clip.
This will split the clip in the timeline but retain the captured file in one.
Caution:- renaming files will cause problems with existing projects.

Many thanks guys for your speedy and informative replies.Iam in the process of decorating a couple of rooms at this time,so I am covered in paint ( I am not into DIY!!) but like BIG ARNIE SAYS "I will be BACK!! and then I will try out all your proposals. What state I am going to be in when I get into my Multi capture file editing (especially after capturing a lot of my old analogue stuf thro' my ADC) The good news is that you guys understand this current problem + lot of my stuff is filmed in-and -around Sydney (my Son lives and works there) so putting 2&2 together Iam hoping that Brian-with his reference to Sydney Zoo- will give me moral support if nothing else.
