changing temp directory

Post by frantid »

hello,

anyone know how to change the temp directory in vs10+? I've tried changing the xp environment variables and changing the working directory but neither works. Is it hard coded somewhere in the registry or a file?

I've got a separate physical drive I'd like it to use but it won't do it.

thanks
Trevor Andrew

Hi

Not sure what you mean re:- temp directory.

If you are referring to the ¡¥working folder¡¦ then you can change this location from File-Preferences

The Working Folder is the same as the Capture Folder shown in the capture screen.

The Working Folder is where Video Studio saves all its captured files.

I allocate a separate folder for each project.

Hope this Helps

I do the same as Trever, on another drive I have a seperate folder for each project. Makes finding things a breeze, and cleanup a lot easier.

I know about the working directory. I've done that, but I've noticed that vs10 sill uses windows temp directory when it needs to render something. Usually c:\docs&settings\user\local\temp.... - I don't want it working there as I want to keep virus scan on the temp folder. I don't have it scanning on the separate drive for vs projects.

thanks,

After you have assigned another folder or drive as the working folder, just uncheck the first box. I also use a seperate drive, and so I also change the drive location, found in the drop-down menu at the bottom.

I've tried that, thanks there is some setting perhaps in the mpeg or dvd encoder settings that must be using this directory. If you create disk, watch the temp dir it will create a file there -- even if it smartrenders. odd but true.

I suppose you realise that the burning module has a separate working folder in its settings icon (first on the left of the three icons in the bottom left of the burning screen). However, by default, that is the same as the one in the General Preferences on the main screen -- though it is not changed if the latter is changed. It must be changed separately.

I suspect the folder you are after, though is the one in File > Preferences > Preview which is set by default to the C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Local Settings\Temp folder. You can designate up to 3 alternative folders and uncheck the Temp one...

thanks Ken.

I've changed that one as well. I know this is odd. I noticed it when creating a video file. It's mpeg compliant and I was seeing no file size increase in the resulting file for the first 700 meg or so. I looked for where the file must be generated and found it in the temp directory. This first step of the smart render is slow. Then after that it starts adding to the final file in the proper directory. Once it adds to the final file, it is really fast render. I maybe more "anal retentive" than most on my c drive, but I try to keep it clean so my video station stays stable. Maybe this is just something I have to live with though.

thought I would ask, thanks everyone for the replies. I'll start digging through the registry and the ini files for vs 10.

thanks again...

I found it, I think the mpeg encoder itself is using the "user" variable "TMP" for the first 200 Meg of a render. You can change it by going to system properties -> advanced -> environment variables -> edit user variable "TMP" with whatever drive\folder you want. I have to monitor what other programs use that variable, but at least I've got it off my system drive and onto a separate physical drive. My separate physical drive is a faster smaller drive that I just use for the pagefile.sys and now temp folder. Just didn't want the renders doing multiple reads and writes to the same physical disk at the same time.

Just thought I'd pass it on. Ulead seems to create several files that start with "~" at the beginning of a mpeg render. It does delete them after the render is complete.
