What exactly IS "trimmed video"?

Post by kebrinton »

I've used UVS for some years and am STILL unclear about what trimmed video is. It's practically the only feature I don't use.

"Trimmed video" might be the part you want to keep, after trimming off excess at the ends. Makes sense.

BUT . . . "trimmed video" might ALSO be the part you trimmed off. Since you no doubt are going to save the main part, there would be no need to have a special function to do this. So, reasonably, "saving trimmed video" might be like saving sawdust in the workshop or saving scraps of film you scissored off onto the editing floor.

I'm honestly confused. Is it obvious to everybody but me?

Keith,
Save Trimmed Video copies the selected section of a video clip into a new file. So cuts are real, rather than virtual, as done with the Scissors or Multi-Trim Video controls. I believe that it smart renders during this process because you have no way to specify different properties.

I prefer to use the virtual cut methods, now that Ulead has gotten nearly all of the bugs out.

Aha.

So "save" in this context is like "save" in a Word document. It's not just project instructions. And you lose the trimmings.

Can you apply Undo after using Save Trimmed Video?

You don't lose the trimmings since the original file remains untouched. Just a new file is created with the trimmed part in it. That goes into the library pane.

I think there is still some uncertainty - mainly because we may have different interpretations of the word "trimmings." If this word means the extra, unwanted part of the video file then the trimmings are not copied to the new file - only the wanted part is copied. However, the unwanted trimmings are still present in the original source file. They haven't been physicall deleted.

So when I said "cuts were real, not virtual, with Save Trimmed Video" I meant only in the new file. However, the original file is not touched at all.
