Settings for best capture?

Post by Jumper »

Hi,

Im using a Kworld DVD maker USB2 which comes with MV4 se.

I am trying to back up some films from vhs tapes and burn then to DVD, so far I have managed to do this but the content on the DVD's come out darker with the loss of quality as well makeing them hard to watch.

I accept that the quality will be poorer, but how can I lighten the copied film? what settings do I need to set in MV4?

Unfortunetly I can only use the Composite in cable connected to my video player, I do know that s-video would give better results.

Any help most welcome.

Cheers

I'm not sure about your version of Movie Factory, but there may be an Effect tab, and maybe an Auto Enhancement button to automatically adjust brightness and contrast.

A full-featured video editor like Video Studio has a full range of adjustments.

But, let's back-up a bit....

- The quality of the video is determined by the analog-to-digital converter in your capture device, and in your case by the hardware MPEG encoder in your capture device. (Sometimes MPEG encoding is done by the PC.) Analog capture is the trickiest thing in this whole digital video business...

- Make sure you have a USB-2 connection on your computer. USB-1 is too slow for real-time video. (I think you are OK. The problems you describe don't sound like those caused by USB-1.)

- Capture to MPEG-2. This is the DVD format. Capture to a high bitrate. (A bitrate of about 6000kbps is a good starting-point.)

- If your capture device came with special video capture software, use it instead of Movie Factory for the capture step. Capture hardware works best with software that's made specially to work with it.

- If you do have some other special capture software, there may be a way to adjust brightness during capture.

- If you must adjust the video after capture, you may degrade the clarity, or the video may become 'blocky". Your set-up captures to MPEG only... MPEG is lossy compression, and when you edit/modify it, it has to be decoded and then re-coded. That means a 2nd lossy encode step. :(

Hi DVDDoug,

Many thanks for your reply, The Kworld device was bundled with MV4 se, I guess the software is a dumbed down version, so I will probably source MV5 + from ebay etc.

I did not know that MPEG-2 was equal to DVD format so I will check the next time I try it out. (thanks for that).

I guess there would be loss of quality, but if I could lighten the end result it would make up for some loss of the detail.

I might even look into using other software as you suggest.

Thanks for your time and effort. :)

Just want to throw a note of caution here...

If you are going to buy the software off of ebay, then don't be surprised that it turns out to be a hacked version. There are alot of those flying around. Hacked versions are not able to be registered, and there is absolutley little or no support when it crashes. The SP's will not install properly, and will tell on the software. You can get it from Ulead, probably for the same price as you will spend on ebay. If you find prices on ebay real cheap, it is a hack. The seller has to pay at least what Ulead sells it for. Do you think that the seller is in business to loose money? So just be cautious...

Yes, the bundled "SE" version is "dumbed-down" version. But, it may actually be tweaked to work with the Kworld device. So, it might actually work better (for capture) than the regular retail version! I suspect there are different SE versions for different hardware, but I'm not sure...

Before you buy anything, download the free trial version (and the user manual). And, I recommend that you give Video Studio a try. Video Studio is geared toward video editing. (Contrast & brightness fall under "editing".) Movie Factory is focused on DVD authoring, and it has very limited editing capability.

Ulead's product line-up is very confusing... All of the programs claim to do everything.... So like I said, download the trial version first!

DVDDoug,

Again I thank you for your advice, it sounds like the the video studio would meet my demands.
