Can I output 16:9 from 4:3 data?

Post by mikemoon »

I've been using the widescreen option of my JVC camcorder, which just puts black bars at top/bottom of video.

I would rather have the end product clipped or cropped with output at 16:9 res. I'm using VideoStudio 10. How do I do it? Can I do it?

Output to be used for web... 320xWhatever.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike

Have a look at My Quick Guide 16:9 a Look at Widescreen from the link below

The black bars at the top and bottom are not part of the video frame.

One option for wmv, you should be able to render the project to Share-Share on Line

Hope this helps

Thank you for the link. I followed it all the way through, but the output still seems to be 4:3.
I think this maybe in part due to the choices that I can pick from for WMV or MP4 video types.
I was wanting the output file to be in 16:9 format. 320x180
Only in MOV could I put in my own dimensions.

Do you follow?

Hi Mike

If you Share--Create Video File¡XCustom

Select¡XSave as Type¡XWindows media

Options¡XProfile¡Xselect a profile (a Neptune one may do)

To the bottom of the window

Display Aspect Ratio gives a 16:9 option

I have not used wmv¡¦s in 16:9 and therefore cannot comment on the results.

Unfortunately some camcorders do output a pseudo 16:9. A friend could not understand why his widescreen shots looked odd in VS. I discovered that it was because the output was actually 4:3 but looked 16:9 because all the camcorder had done was put black bars at the top and bottom.

Hi bwavin

I agree with you, it can be difficult to distinguish between these frames, especially as we cannot view them.

Read my guide to 16:9 a look at widescreen.

By changing the background colour of the preview screen allows you to see the actual frame.

Hey Trevor,

I've had some luck following your walkthrough. Although I've not been able to save in actual 16:9, the 4:3 output is much better. I mean better , in that unlike the black banners the camera, the true 16:9 is not effected by the addition of contrasting or sharpening filters.

I've checked out the custom saving option and I just don't have much of a choice. I don't have one called Neptune. Is this a different type of codec?
I'm looking for MP4 and WMV output at 320X(whatever (180)).

Update: I was able to save to 320x240 with an aspect ratio of 16:9. Then take that into Quicktime and export at 320x180 and it looks great. Now if I could just do it right through Ulead, I'd be laughin'.

Hi Mike

If you haven¡¦t already, upgrade your version of Windows Media Player to the latest version.

Also download Windows Media Encoder.

This should give you more choice for WMV codecs.
