Intel® Core™ Duo
Anyone know if a Intel® Core™ Duo will be a big improvement for MSP8 (current version)????? Can MSP8 be made to take full advantage of core-duo with a SP or will we need to wait for MSP9?????
Thanks,
Bob S

Core Duo
I'm using MSP 8 and I've been editing with a P4 2.6 Ghz with 512 megs RAM, and still use this. Just yesterday I was rendering a 1.5 hour mpeg2 video with it and it was taking over 5 hours. I have a new Core Duo system with 2 gigs RAM and rendered the same video in 2 1/2 hours. You could say that's a big improvement
First of all, I can say that the intel systems are not enough for msp or the other video software. Because 2 years ago I used to use intel system and the result were not good enough. So I have tried another system; The AMD... I have tested many times and the result was the best; it' s become more stable. No drops, no quality loss, and no no no no... The AMD is the best for graphics and video graphics. Also it is cheaper than intel. You may buy both AMD cpu and AMD motherboard with the cost of one intel cpu. In my opinion, you should try it, then you can understand the differences between the AMD and the intel.

That is just nonsense (except for the cost issue). Most video software is actually developed and optimised on Intel processors and only subsequently tested on AMD.Alptonay wrote:First of all, I can say that the intel systems are not enough for msp or the other video software. Dear Devil and Don Smith; I have tested them several times and the results said that the AMD is one step ahead. Because of L1 cache. this is very important to procces. I may show some about my tests but in this topic this was just a suggestion. rs02931 should make his own decision and tests. Also the systems are expensive and you won't have a chance to change it every time. I had a chance and tried it. AMD proccessors are more stable; because of that the hardware guide magazine/hardware guide site testers do not overclock the AMD cpus but the intel. If you look at carefully while testing intel cpus are overclocked. in my opinion, testing by overclocking is not correct. So this is only a suggestion, extremely for MSP8 with sp1...

Ofcourse Bob, msp is already optimized but needs a bit more. But I think sp2 or a new update is not far away for this. and could you please tell me about the problem you have? or is there any problem? is it about rendering or rendering time or encoding-decoding problem or something else? we may help you in other way to fix your problem..

I agree AMD is better than Intel in CPU architecture before Intel Core Duo is out.
However, what Don and Devil said is also true. Most software providers optimize their softwares for Intel and do tests on both Intel and AMD. Intel offers more optimization resources than AMD to software providers, and Intel works very closely and aggressively with these software providers.
I also like AMD CPUs and I use AMD CPUs for a very long time (my first AMD CPU is AMD 386DX-40 and keep using AMD for my desktop after that). But I have to say AMD needs to catch up for better supporting the software providers.

I run a Centrino Duo - looking at the task manager, MSP 8 (service pack 1) does not use both cores when rendering an .avi file to mpeg.
Only one core was used during the process. I note that nowhere in the documentation for MSP 8 does it claim to be optimised for multi-cores (no idea if it works with hyper threaded CPU's).
Hopefully Service Pack 2 will add support for dual cores (as has been done recently with VS 10).

That's correct. Currently only Sony Vegas has true multi threaded encoding and can even use a network of PCs to speed up rendering. Apple's compressor program also can make use of several PCs (or nodes as it calls them)
Of course you will see a speed increase when using mulitple core processors with MSP, but this is mainly due to the other core (or cores) processing the other tasks the computer is running, thereby freeing up the core that is doing the actual rendering work to focus only on the rendering. The new core 2 duos also have faster FSB and larger Cache which helps alot, not to mention the deeper instruction set.
