error trying to edit vsp

Post by davidpjr »

after I save a vsp and then come back, open it, edit it and save it again, I can't open it anymore. It says file format error or can't open the file.

I would think that once I save a vsp I should be able to save it again or save it as something else and open and edit it as much as I wish. But, I can't. I'd better get the editing right the first time or I have to start all over.

I'm not sure why you are having trouble, unless you are changing some of your video or image files between editing sessions.

The VSP file itself doesn't contain the actual video. It just contains the links and "instructions" for the editing process. (When you go to the Share screen and make a new-edited video file, it creates a new video from the original files and the instructions.)

So, if you re-open the project and one or more of those original files has changed, Video Studio can get confused.

It must get very confused. I just know if I save the vsf, then reopen it, redit, save again, then that is the last time I will be able to access that file. I won't even be able to use it to make the dvd as it goes off into "can't open this file" land.

Hi David

Are you sure you are opening a vsp file?

I run video studio 10 in Video Edit mode

I click File-Open Project
I browse my folders for the project file xxxxxx.VSP

I see the file and can see the extension VSP

Do you see the file as a VSP file.?

also

The lower part of the File-popup window (immediately above the ¡¥Exit¡¦ word) usually lists recently used projects. Do you see these?

I click on these to open.

Yes, I see the vsp. I also see those listed. When I select them, nothing happens. When I go to the directory where it resides, and select it, I get that error message. I have already uninstalled and reinstalled once and that did not help. It is like it is losing its mind after I save that vsp, edit it again and save it again and then exit and try to reopen the vsp. Strange. Ulead tech team suggest I uninstall and reinstall, then turn off everything running except the pc. Even disconnect from the internet. Seems far fetched to me.

If reinstalling produces the same symptoms, it could be a corrupt download...

Please confirm that after saving the project file you have not moved or deleted ANY of the video or audio files involved.

I am beginning to think that maybe I just don't know this as well as I thought. I have run a few test scenarios and this is probably where I am making my mistake. Well, rather than bore you with the details, once I have a project opened in the timeline, how do I get it out of the timeline. I seem to be saving it, and then I delete it from the timeline. When I go to try and open the project again, it can't open the vsp.

However, If I save the vsp and then just shut down vs10 and reopen and then add it back to the timeline, all seems to be ok.

I think the problem might be that I delete it from the timeline but I am not sure why that is causing the trouble. I am still going through everyones tutorials.

The easiest and safest way to clear your timeline is to use
File | New Project
You will be asked if you wish to save the current project first and then you will find you have a nice clean empty timeline.

Steve, Thank you. It could be that my process of clearing the timeline is what is corrupting or doing whatever to my files. I will experiment some more.
Thanks again.

Hi David

If you edit a project
Then File Save or Save As ----the project with all its bits and pieces are saved.

If you now delete the timeline you are again editing the same project.
If you now close Video Studio, you will be prompted to save, if you say ¡¥yes/ok¡¦ then the edited version with the clip deleted will be saved.

When you open the project, it will be empty, you can see the name at the top.

As Steve said use File New Project to start a new one, but again you may be prompted to save the one you are working on. If its empty then you save an empty project.
