DVD Credits/Titles Don't Fit on TV Screen

Post by clarkni »

I am close to completing a major project converting a concert from VHS to DVD. As part of the project I added my own introduction credits (in VideoStudio 8 SE using bitmap images).

The finished MPEG looks fine when played on a PC as does the DVD which was authored and burnt to disc using Movie Factory 3 SE.

The results on the TV however are disappointing. On the TV the edges of the images for the credits sequence are lost cutting off some of the text. Even if I adjust the settings on my TV between 4:3 16:9 etc. it has no impact. I was kind of expecting "what you see is what you get" as seen in preview mode).

Some help would be appreciated - I can see the finish line on a project that has taken some time to complete! :D

Thanks,
Nick

Movie Factory 3 SE (available patches applied)

The rendered file information is as follows:

MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 7000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 384 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

The MPEG file size is 4.61GB (4.29GB) and was created using VideoStudio 8 SE.

I have some bad news...

This is normal. TVs don't display the whole picture. It's called overscan. Some of the picture is cut-off on all 4 sides. This allows for some mis-adjustment of the TV, or "drift" as the TV warms-up, or distortion and roughness around the edges. The amount of overscan varies, depending on the TV, but it should be less than 10%. A better (or better adjusted) TV will have less overscan.

The area which should show-up on all TVs is called the safe area All of the titles must be inside the safe area.

Thanks for the explanation Doug. Ok, so it's bad news but not a total disaster. At least it's not a problem with Movie Factory and there is a work around.

I appreciate now that this is really a VideoStudio discussion and saw yours and Ken's response in that forum http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic. ... =safe+area.

I created the title images with other software and loaded them into VideoStudio so didn't see the safe area boder. I will just have to trim down the images that are affected. At least I will know for future projects :)

Thanks,
Nick
