Can/Will the VS10+ support the new Sony SR1?

Post by marshall »

Just jumped the boat and got myself a new Sony SR1 with the AVCHD format. Will the VS10+ support files from the Sony SR1 (.m2ts) ever?

Please tell me it is in the works!!!!!!

The SR-1 encodes the video in AVCHD Transport Stream format. The only software that can play it (in the PC) is the Sony Motion Picture Browser. The Browser can't edit but can transcode to Mpeg2 but only after downrezing from 1440x1080 pixels to 720x480 (standard definition).

There are rumors (unconfirmed) that one can burn the AVCHD file (on a Blu_Ray DVD, if you happen to have a Blu-Ray Burner ($700) and some blank Blu-Ray DVDs ($20 - $30) laying around.

But wait a bit and I am sure that Ulead will release support for this format, as will other video editors. Sadly, there is no timetable.

You can commiserate with other SR1 users at

Edit: Alert someone has just found that Tmpgenc 4.0 Express can edit AVCHD - see http://www.sonyhdvinfo.com/showthread.php?t=7296

Yes but looks like the Tmpgenc will re-encode the AC3 to 2 channels only......

Picky, picky, picky. :D
Seriously, I have hardly ever gotten a clean sound track from a camcorder's internal mikes. In a real environment, somebody is always coughing, screaming, breathing heavy, or some idiot in his new car is maxing out the engine, etc. I usually dub in music and mute the sound track. I also find that my on-camera narrations are bad and have my wife dub in better stuff.

Moreover, even in a clean environment, how good is surround sound going to be without a lot of very special equipment. By the time you get all this stuff, there will be a lot of other editors that can handle AVCHD with surround sound audio...

Edit: MD, a lot of users say that Vegas doesn't work for AVHCD (yet).

You can send me a small clip via email (less than 10megs).
I'll let you know if it loads and/or converts.
