Dolby Digital Trailers Imported into VS10+

Post by blplhp »

Hello All,

Wow, we're back!!! Thank goodness!

I have two questions:

1) I imported a few of the Dolby Digital trailers ( the ones that demonstrate the 5.1 surround sound placements) from a DVD test disc called "DVD Spectacular" by Delos, dated 1997. The imported video clips came into VS10+ as MPEG-2 files in Upper Field First . I thought it was strange that this file imported as upper field first, which indicates that it is an analog file. If I add this clip into my project which contains DV_AVI video clips that are lower field first, will the trailer clip work right? Is there a way to convert the Dolby Digital trailer from upper field first to lower field first? Or should I just wait to convert it when I create my MPEG-2 video file once my editing is completed? Is there a place to import these Dolby trailers in the lower field first frame type?

2) In reference to the Dolby Digital trailers, obviously those video clips are in 5.1 surround sound. All of the video clips in my home movies are in stereo and I always create my video files using Dolby Stereo. Is there a way to have the Dolby Digital trailer playback in 5.1 while the balance of the DVD movie I create playback in Dolby Stereo? Should I make the Dolby trailer a separate video file that I load into the media file timeline of the DVD authoring module?

:?:
Cheers,

Bryan P.

There will undoubtedly be other opinions on this, and I am happy to be shot down.

However, first of all, the simple fact that the video you imported shows Upper Field First, does not ipso facto make it analogue (although its date might tend in that direction). There are today a growing number of digital video cameras which shoot digital video using Upper Field First, particularly those which use mini DVDs or hard discs.

Trying to mix UFF and LFF videos together to produce a single video using only one of the Field Orders is, IMHO, a big no-no. One of them will suffer. However, leaving the original mpeg-2 with UFF as a separate video title on the final DVD should be OK. It will remain DVD-compatible whether it is UFF or LFF and thus should burn and play back with no trouble.

Ditto with the audio. If you leave it as a separate title, then with the 'Do not convert compatible mpeg files' box checked in the burning module, VS should -- at least in theory -- leave the full box and dice alone when burning it to disc.
